when raising a daughter will begin tomarrow!

My daughter has been camping with friends for the last few days. Well durring this time she has begun her womanly thing for the first time.

The mother of the friend she is camping with has been dealing with it for me for the time being, but my daughter will be home tomarrow and I still do not know what to say or how to handle this.

I have known that this day would come. But I have no way of being ready for this as I do not know all about this type of thing as we guys do not have this problem.

Maybe some of our females on the forum can assist me here!

    Thanks Zip. I will look it over.

    All the sites I have seen so far do not deal with a girls first period though!

    The sex talks and such I can probly handle.

    But I have never had a period so I do not know how to disscuss it at all![;)][:o)]

    How about asking a lady friend/relative to help you out? A lady doctor?

    If she was still in school for the year, a school nurse or trusted female faculty member is also a good idea. A doctor might not be a good idea just yet. She might get the wrong impression about this normal & natural occurence.

    I am going to get her to the doc as she seems a bit young for this. And My sister-in-law is going to help some.

    But I still have to deal with around the house on a full time basis. And this is were I don't know what to do or how to handle it.

    I am hopeing between the doc and sis-in-law they will be able to help with my end as well.

    I was hopeing this would not happen for another couple years though!

    School just got out about 2 weeks ago here. I had thought of that too.

    You have my sympathy, but no advice. I had their mother available for this.

    I did, however, give each of them the "predatory boys only after one thing" talk. Most awkward 30 seconds of my life.

    Keep it simple....make it so if she wants to ask you anything it is easy for her to ask. Its easy to explain if you keep it "matter of fact"....

    There are little eggs in your tummy...they come down little tubes and land in a special place in your belly....if you were going to be a mom they would stay and a baby would grow...but since you are a little girl they don't stay and the way they come out is called your period. Tell her it happens once a month....and she should mark on a calendar when it started and when it stops just so she can get an idea of when it will happen again.

    You should go and get her PADS....not tampons...pads are better for little girls. They make them in smaller sizes for teens but are dang near impossible to find. Never ever ever EVER buy generic....they are horrible and you just don't skimp on some things. Even if you can find the "teen" size go ahead and get some of the bigger ones for sleeping in. If you get her a few different kinds...she will let you know which ones to get next time....or she will just throw them in the buggy when you go to the store.

    Oh...and the age for this is getting younger and younger. My 11 yr old started not long ago. They say it is all of the things they have been adding to food doing it....but I have no real clue on that. The older of my two girls WINS HANDS DOWN on our "you will never believe what she did" tale.....

    Years ago my oldest started her period....she has always been VERY close to my mother and she asked if she could call Grandmama. I told her go ahead and call. I listened in just so I might hear of anything I needed to know about. She dials the phone....and says in a chipper voice...."GUESS WHAT...I started my PERIOD!!!" (jibbers a little chit chat stuff)

    AND THEN.....the words I will never forget....

    "can I speak to Grandmama?"

    (I was in TOTAL shock!!!!) I darted in the room and said said "who are you talking to???"

    She says in that non-worried at all little voice...."Grand-daddy"

    My mouth was WIDE OPEN...hand over it....bent over....grabbing my waist....not breathing....starting to almost go to the floor.....OH DEAR LORD she's talking to MY DAD about her period!!!! Ha Ha Ha

    Oh....if you guys KNEW my dad....you would just die picturing this.

    There's plenty of books out there and on line. We deal with single parents all the time. Read up on it, answer questions as matter of fact as you can, and if you don't make it a big deal, she won't make it a big deal. If you flip out, she'll flip out.

    She will not see it.[:D]

    My kids only get the computer supervised and even with the G rateing here there are things (like the troll and his have you shot anyone) I do not want them to see.

    They do know that I spent alot of time on this forum though so I'm sure someday the kids will want on here. But I'll let them get a little older first.

    Her post has definatly helped! And I thank her for her input very much![:D]

    I think the more technical stuff (that her friends mother has not told her so far) will be handled with my sister-in-law as I think my daughter will handle it better from a female.

    I just know that there are things I will need to know as well since her mother is not here to handle this type of thing. And I knew that I would have to deal with this at some time I just was not prepaired for it to happen yet!

    You're okay until she wants to start talking about her period with you.
    If thats all I will just tell her to talk to her 6yo brother since he is the only other person in the house![;)][:o)][:o)][:o)]

    Git-r-done.... Did I overlook it or did you say how old she is.... That may make a difference in how to deal with this..... My daughter just had a freind start her period at 9 years old.

    My daughter is 9. She will be 10 next month.

    That is why I was not ready for this. I figured I had untill about 11 or 12 anyway.

    No. They're coming earlier and earlier. The reason I've heard is because of all the hormones that we're feeding our livestock that makes it into the food chain. It apparently physically matures children, as as more and more hormones are placed in the food chain, kids are maturing earlier and earlier.

    So, like I said, you're okay so long as she doesn't want to talk about her period.

    I'm glad I only had boys!

    But I think you need to consider her maturity. I gave my older son "the talk" when he was 10. My younger one was 12 when I decided he was ready. I think it all depends on the kid.

    So far-no issues with either kid. I kind of think that education is the answer. Just like handling guns.

    But I'll knock on wood and keep my fingers crossed anyway.[;)]
