Magna porting a barrel
I am going to Africa and I bought a 416 Rigby caliber 550 Modle CZ rifle, A gunstore guy who seemes knowledgeable tells me that if a install a muzzel break to the barrel there isn't hearing portection available to portect hearing from the amount of decimiles produced by a 400 grain 416 Rigby.
I have never heard this before, however I am not an expert.

Obviously, any hearing protection would be better than none, but I'd talk to my audiologist about getting plugs made just for you.
My ear guy tells me that he can make me custom plugs for about $225.
Do you know how many decibels you can expect from that gun/load?0 -

No immpossible...if it was that loud it would cause phisical damage (or death), I think a good pair of foam ear plugs would work just fine. Cant be any louder than a 460 ported with a 10 in barrel (feels like its going to blow your pants off)0 -
The gunstore guy is no audiologist. He's wrong. Call Magna port and see what they have to say. 0 -

Before making any decision regarding what type or style of muzzle brake you want to use, you really need to discuss this with your Professional Hunter since he will have the final sayso as to what he will allow. I know this sounds a little high handed but the PH is usually very close if not right on top of you for the stalk and the shot. I have seen situations where the PH will offer a body position to aid you as a rest in order to be assured of a killing shot. Some are in an extremely close proximity to the muzzle. They are only asking for respect for their hearing. See what he has to say and ask for his opinion.
Your 'gunstore guy' doesn't have the vaguest idea of what he's talking about. All sounds in the higher decibel range will do damage to your hearing so you do need to protect yourself and be aware of others also but he exaggerates. I use fitted ear plugs with electronics in them which work terrific for me but may not be for everyone.
The Rigby is actually very pleasant to shoot, acting with a slightly bigger push than a jolting smack in the shoulder. The 416 Remington and the 416 Weatherby have decidely sharper recoil than the Rigby by a significant amount. Enjoy and let us know about your ear protection.
