My son's first turkey! -with photos!
My son Jacob, got his first turkey on Sunday. [:D] It went 22 1/4 pounds with a 9 inch beard and spurs that went over an inch and had started to curl.
What a bird! His first is bigger than any I've shot yet and the second biggest I've ever helped anyone get. I helped a friend get a 23 pounder about 5 years ago.

If he's hooked you have created a monster.[:D][:D][:D] I'd give up all other hunting seasons for a never ending suppy of turkeys. Just can't get enough. 0 -

Gun is a Remington 1187 with 24' vent rib barrel, Undertaker choke tube and a youth stock for a Remington 1100. Load used was a Remington 12 ga 2 3/4 inch Premier Magnum 1 1/2 oz copper plated #6.
He patterned it first with a 2 ounce load of #6 by Federal (that's what I use) but the recoil was a little much so I dug into my ammo supply and found the lighter load. Bird was shot in the thumb area of Michigan.
Bird was about 20 yards away when he shot. I found 1 pellet in the breast-the rest were in head or neck or missed the bird clean.
My wife cooked it Sunday evening and I have been eating turkey ever since. It was cooked in a boil-in bag and it it still kinda tough-not inedible but kinda tough.
I have 3 model 1187's (one for me and each of my 2 sons) and I have been hunting with the same barrel and choke but on my full size camo'd 1187.
I just got in from hunting about an hour ago. I saw several birds and called a hen in but no toms and they were awfully quiet today. Yesterday I had 4 different toms gobbling nearby but the only one I could get close to got led off by another hen that flew across a creek to him before taking him in the other direction.
I only have 3 more days to try and score one for me.[:(]0 -

That turkey makes my first pheasant and first quail look pretty small! What a great bird for a good young hunter! Congratulations! 0 -

My 15 year old daughter Caitlin got a 22 pound Tom during the recent NY Youth Hunt.
I don't dress out the entire bird any longer. Out of about 80 birds I have harvested over the past 27 years I have only plucked two of them. I'll never do one again. All I do is breast them out. The legs & wings of a wild turkey are used to run and fly with. That is why they are so tuff. The breast meat is about the only thing worth keeping. Try cutting it in strips and deep frying it like chicken. Our kids like it best that way. I live to chase these crazy birds. I took off every Friday this month so I can go Turkey hunting.[:D]

Update- I called in 3 jakes on Friday but couldn't put a beard on one. They came in so quickly from behind me, I had no time to get in a shooting position.
Also, I had a few others going and called numerous hens into within about 30 feet but no luck. My season ends in less than 2 hours. I might go out and try to sit in an area I know they will be in when heading to roost but it is 6:43pm and my season ends at 8:07 pm. I think I am getting skunked this year-my kid will never let me live it down.0 -

Almost got one!
Went out and sat by the creek behind my house for my last hour+ of season. A gobbler came down into creek bed from woods. Heard him gobble. Waited for him to sound off again to position myself to get a shot.
Next time he gobbled, he was about 40 yards to my right going over a downed tree. Shifted my gun to my weak side and decided to try to shoot him left handed when he popped up again. Saw his head come up but couldn't see the beard. (Michigan law requires it be a bearded bird.) He then flew across the creek.
Crows were making a racket and he was gobbling like crazy! But I never got another look at him. It was an incredible season anyway-just wish it were a couple of days longer-I was just starting to figure them out and it is all done. A week sure goes fast.
