Bullet question.
45acp

I know for the .45acp there is a lot of lighter loads (185gr 175gr 165gr) for self defense and so on. My question is how light can you get with these bullets and still be accurate?

Are there special twist rate barrels made for this like the 1 in 9 barrels for the heavy 22lr rounds?

What is the standard twist rate of a 1911 barrel?

  I think at pistol ranges the twist rate really won't matter, or at least it won't until you get into extremes for bullet weight.

  Rate of twist: 16 in (406 mm) per turn, or 1:35.5 calibers (.45 ACP) ...

  I personally use 225 grain semi jacketed hollow points as my defense load backed by X grains of bullseye powder.

  The shorter the bullet, the slower the twist can be and still stabilize the bullet (this is why a faster twist rate is required to shoot the longer bullets well).
  
  Twist rate depends on bullet LENGTH (and velocity), not weight. Although heavier bullets are generaly longer, a Spitzer boat tail or a VLD design will be much longer than a flat base roundnose style of the same, or heavier, weight.
