Natural I know 50 bmg would be on this list, but what are some others.

Long range and high BC go together like macaroni and cheese
Once you get above a 338 cal cartridge high BC bullets get hard to find and expensive to purchase.
The 338 RUM is equal to the 338 Lapua, but a lot easier to find receivers/rifles for and the ammo is fairly common.
Now if all your shooting is paper, you can back way down in the recoil dept, and look at quite a large number of cartridges from 6.5mm on up.
The cartridge is only 1 part of the equation, the quality of the rifle and the skill of the operator (esp the skill) are much more important.0 -

I sure like the .356 Winchester. When it came out a lot of people said it was going to be a hot new calibre for big game. It works great but I guess it is not too popular so ammo is a bit on the expensive side. But I still think it is a great big bore calibre carabine. I should say that I am kind of a lever gun nut, too! So I am still very happy with my Winchester Model 94AE in .356 calibre.[:)] 0 -

Floyd - That is a SUPER deal so far on that Wby Mk V Deluxe. If I needed a 340wby mag I would go after that one. That 340Wby mag is a very fine big bore caliber. Ammo runs about $35 - $45 per box but what do you expect from Weatherby. 0 -

Well, the .22LR, .30Carbine, .222Rem, .30-30Win or 8x58R and .30-06 won't fit the criteria..
The .50BMG probably will - but why not go all the way and choose the 20mm ?!?

The biggest bore gun I have is not the most powerful I have.....My old .35 Remington Model 8. Probably made in the first year of manufacture. Don't need anything bigger because my old bones probably couldn't stand it anyway. [:)][:)]

I looks like a lot of people didn't read your question very closely.
A lot of the cartridges mentioned are designed for "up close and personal" thump, but don't have the long range capability due to bullet design. A few have mentioned cartridges where appropriate bullets (alone) are in the $3-5 each range.
If all your doing is punching paper, the 30-06 and 300 Win Mag will handle 1000yd shooting.

I was thinking 1000 yards plus. Not a paper puncher, but a bragging rights big bore. Something that isn't too expensive, but I've been finding out that once you go big there really isn't much of a price differance. Like 375 rum is almost the same a 50 bmg.
I doubt if I will buy a gun that big, I'm not strong enough for heavy recoil. I just like learn all I can about guns.
And who knows maybe I will get one someday. If I do I will be well informed.0 -
Your least expensive way to go, and still retain some bragging rights would be a 338 RUM (chunking 300gr Sierra Matchkings).
Keeping the rifle weight up in the 12-15lb range and adding a decent brake, will do a lot to tame the beast. The most effective way to add the weight is with a 30+" long barrel of a medium-heavy contour.
JustC, NoNonsense, and the other LR guys might have a line on a used BR rig, which would be a good starting point0 -

This is my current project, it's chambered for the 300 Tomahawk (300 RUM Improved 35*). It's been in the works for about 3 years, and is finally getting close to completion. Photos just to give you a few ideas of what you can build up, or find on the used LR market.

Receiver is a CZ Mag originally in 375 H&H (got it in a trade). Not a target grade receiver by any stretch, but I love my Mauser's.
Barrel is a 30" Lilja 1:12 3 groove #8 contour (off his clearance rack)
The stock is the one that FrancF gave away last year, (it's a little short for me, but it'll work for now)
The scope is one that I had laying around, and is only temporary.
As it sits now, it weighs in at 12lb, and kicks like a standard 308Win bolt gun (but it's bark is a lot worse [:D] )0
