If you had a Model 700 receiver for a custom rifle what would you have it made into?

If I was going to spend the money on a custom rifle, I would want to get it in a caliber that would be useful for all of the game that I usually hunt and target shooting. I guess I would probably say 25-06 then.

I think that is the point.[;)][:p]. If YOU were building YOUR own custom rifle then what would You choose for a caliber(based on your needs/wants, etc.).

It would be built into a switch barrel bench rest rig. That way I could shoot everything from 22 waldog to the new 6.5 creedmore, depending on what match is comming up.
Or I would build a long range rifle for silenced applacations. I have been dreaming about a .50 American Eagle for a while now.0 -

I was in a bit of a hurry when I started this thread and was just looking for ideas from the members for a Model 700 based build.
My first choice would be a rifle chambered for 308 as claose as possible to the old M40 sniper rifle but the receiver I have is a long action so 308 is not going to work.
I am thinking about something like this.

I meant I am not going to aim for an M40 clone because the M40 was based on a short action.
I will someday when I can find a short action 700 receiver.
I may go the 308 but more like an M240 -

Well,...if it has to be a 308, then that is already decided. I'd go with a 1:11 twist, 3 or 4 groove tube, at 28" or so. If the chambering isn't already decided,..I'd look hard at a 6.5x55 (or the improved version) or maybe a 6.5x284,...either one in a 1:8 twist configuration.
If you want magnum horsepower, I'd look at the 300win mag or maybe even the 300 or 338RUM. With these, I would go with a 30" tube finished at something like .920"-1" at the muzzle. A 10twist tube would be the choice there.
Stocks, Mcmillan or HS precision tactical. Bases and rings,..Badger Ordnance, IOR Valdada, TPS etc.
Have the action trued/squared, add a thicker recoil lug, replace the trigger with a jewell or rifle basix, change out firing pin and spring for a tubbs or piercision, match grade stainless tube, tapp scope base holes out to 8x40 and this will also bring them more into the centerline of the action. maybe even a tactical bolt knob for increased leverage and better gripping surface.
There are so many choices for a long action,..a lot of it will simply depend on your own preference or idea of what chambering you want to play with.0 -

A thought or two for you to consider:
You're not stuck with a long action. You could trade that long action for a short action, no problem, I'm sure.
If you think the long action will be O.K. then consider that the photo you posted is really the M24SWS which comes set up for the .300 Win. Mag. and is pictured with the long action.
If you have the long action with the '06 bolt face (0.473"), there is nothing wrong with choosing the .30-06 as a cartridge instead of the .308 Win. The .308 is just a shortened version of the '06 which allowed the ground pounders to carry more ammunition and have the same ability as with the older, longer cartridge. The '06 is still a great cartridge and perfectly capable of strutting its stuff in a tactical/sniper rifle. I have one that I take to some competitions just for fun, to prove that you don't really have to have all of that fancy stuff in order to compete. Do I get beat? Sure, sometimes... but not every time!
There are also a number of long action cartridges suited to your desired set up. The .280 Rem. is the first that comes to mind especially with the newer improved VLD-style bullets. But don't overlook the 6.5-06 or the Ackley version, either. Anything you could use the '06 case for, you can substitute the .284 Win. case for also, they are virtually the same in capacity and performance.
You can have the bolt face opened up and a new extractor installed so that you can use the larger belted or beltless magnum cases. The .300 Win. Mag. is a classic for the military as well as the tactical shooters. That shouldn't limit your choices though because there are other cartridges that could be just as much fun and give you plenty of performance.

Personally I'd sell the Rem receiver to someone else, take that money add in the money it would take to blueprint it and purchase a BAT, Stoli, Nosika, etc that is not only configured the way I want it (IE: RH bolt, LH feed, bottom eject or whatever combo floats your boat) but ready to build on as it comes out of the box. 0
