Do colord primers have any indication of the round
I was looking at a belt fed .308 today.
My friend had a few hundred rounds of linked 308 for the rifle that all apperd to be FMJ.
but each primer was stained differently, there were like appx. ten blue then 4 green then one red, ten blue four green on red. appx. i didnt actually count but it was close to that. it might have been like 6,2,1 or 5,2,5,2,1, but there was deffintly a pattern. and there were three distinctive colors blue being the most and red the least and green in the middle.
I thought that rounds were identified by the tip, for instance i have some tracer 45 and .223 and they have red died tips. and i sort of thought that incendiarys were green?
does the coloration around the primer differintiat between round types.
just currious neither of us new the answer as to what we were actually looking at.

What are the headstamps? While AFIK the US doesn't color code the primer, other countries have been known to.

The difference in PRIMER color is just the color of the sealant used by the manufacturer. It does NOT indicate the type of bullet.
Your right.....Different bullets are identified by the color of paint on the TIP of the BULLET. Red or orange for tracer, black for armor piercing, blue for incendiary etc.0 -

If it is linked it is probably machine gun ammo for the M-60. Most linked ammo has a tracer every fifth round. 0 -

While that's a good rule of thumb for US ammo since WW-1, other countries do things differently.
It's not my area of specialty, but I know of ammo where the load ID is made by stamp marks on the case head (IE: part of the headstamp), with NO ID on the bullet tip, and others where the colors of the primer and case mouth sealant indicates how the ammo is loaded.0
