load question for handgun when hunting

Going deer hunting for the first time ever next week. I've always heard it's good advice to bring a handgun for self defense against cats, boars, or pesky game wardens (kidding).

I own a S&W 686+ (6-inch barrel), which is of course chambered in .357 Magnum. Is the load I keep in it for regular home self defense adequate to carry for hunting, as well? Right now I have it loaded with Federal 135-grain JHP. Is this OK, or do I need something designed for more penetration?

I really don't know very much about ammo, so please educate me.

    The way I look at it, with the understanding that just because it costs more, doesn't mean it's better, I'd use the round with the most energy possible. I don't want to be explaining to St. Peter (as the story goes) that I died because I chose a weak (not saying the JHPs are weak) round. My choice would probably be a 180gr JSP.

    Sorry I'm distracted by the INDIANS game right now so this might be a little confusing.

    Jacketed lead will work best for hunting. You'll need penetration on those Boars, the HP's won't do it. Find some HARD CAST loads and use em.

    Federal makes a nice 180gr hardcast lead hunting load. I carry it in my Blackhawk with me when hiking or scouting.

    That load ought to work if you are good with it. I perty much shoot only one load for each gun once I find what it likes. Shoot at all ranges from 10 feet to as far as you would shoot at game. I usually use the pistol to catch grouse, do in a rattler or euphanize something wounded. Remember it's bullet placement not the noise that kills them ie. a clean miss with a cannon is still a miss.

    Look into Federal Fusion 158 grain. It will penetrate and the jacket will not separate from the core.

    I have saw it put black bear, boar and deer on the ground.

    Since it will be used mainly as a back up weapon. Moving up to the 150 to 180 grain will be better than anything lighter.

    What ever round to go with. Try to get a little practice in with the ammo before you head out.

    Whats wrong with using the rifle for defense while hunting?? I carry a small caliber, usually 22, handgun for use on small game. I just don't get the idea of having to carry a large caliber handgun to finish off a deer with, or to use for defense against another animal.
