WHEN DID
the Army start coming to parents home at 1:30 AM and informing them of their sons death? Local boy was killed and they showed up at that time at his fathers. They didn't have any details until the next day when they said he was shot in the head. A day later they told him it was not combat related. [?]

Very unfortunate and unpleasant situation.
I hope the soldier's parents worked the night shift and that is the reason for bringing the unbearable news at such an hour.
About 1970, a friend of mine was wounded and sent home to recover.
While recovering he got stuck with the assignment of delivering the unbearable news to parents and wives. He was only 20, a corporal, and received no training on delivering or bearing such news.
Several months later, he took his own life to escape the anguish. He was a good Marine.0 -
It does sound a little odd that they would go at that hour, but strange things have happened before. When by brother was injured during GW-1 they found my sister-in-law at the PX. Can you believe it, they told her as she was standing in the frozen foods section. 0 -
sounds right to me. If casualty assistance gets the message at midnight, they will send someone out as soon as they can (which may or may not be at a "decent hour.")
For a Soldier's death (whether it is combat related or he fell in a hole and got killed,) they are required to notify next of kin ASAP. Details of the death follow later.
IMO, if my son was killed, I would want to know as soon as possible. If they had waited 2 days to tell me of his death becuase they were getting all the "details" straight, it would piss me off. As I'm sure it would piss of 99% of the population. CNN would have a field day over the "delay in notifications."0
