Boresnakes For Our Guys!

Friend sent me this:

I saw an article about this project ( http://projectboresnake.org/ ) to send Bore Snakes, a commercial rifle/pistol/shotgun cleaning device to our troops in service of our country. I do not personally know any service member oversees but donated to the projects general fund. If you know of any one who could use a donation of these great devices, the web site has an address to write to. I have Bore snakes for each of my rifles and find them very useful. If I knew of a service member, I would submit their name for consideration. I will however, donate to the general fund again. I'm sure the fund has a list of service members they mail to.

    Bore snakes are very cool and I use them, too. I'll be happy to make a donation. Nothin' shoots better than a clean gun.

    I'm sorry I'm missing something. While bore snakes are a great quick fix, they don't clean as completely as a rod with patches, which our GIs already have. When I use a bore snake, even if I make 10, 20 pulls through, if I switch over to a patch or brush, the bore is still filthy. These WOULD be good for knocking sand out of barrels, but I would think that sand would quickly imbed itself in the snake requiring a thorough washing to restore usefulness- if possible- otherwise it would just scratch up a bore.

    Far better to donate funds to buy really good bore cleaners rather than the military stuff which IMHO doesn't do much to remove copper or lead, just removes carbon. Don't get me wrong, I love the principle behind it, just not sure how useful they'll be to our boys. [:(]

    I own and use bore snakes, too. Excellent product.

    But I was wondering if these many websites that ask for donations are really and truly legitimate - OR - if they're set up solely to make a lot of dough and then, to get by legally, spend only a very small percentage of the monies raised on bore snakes (or whatever the item is) which in turn actually get donated. The rest going for administrative expenses.

    I have no problem whatsoever buying two or three of them and sending them DIRECTLY to one of our soldiers in Irag or Afghanistan so that he/she and buddies can use, pass around and share.

    Any thoughts?

    It has to be a money making scheme, as jonk says Bore Snakes do a very poor job at best of cleaning a bore. Can't see where having one would help anyone.

    You bet. BTW, this is my first post - your question made me register. I am a co-founder of http://ProjectBoreSnake.org/

    One of our regular customers had a son over there.....and they were all asking for bore snakes, lens cleaners, and other items. I got a price from several distributors and hunted down the cheapest prices for him and we got a pretty heafty package sent off to his son. If you guys check with your local stores and give them a list....I bet they will do the same for you. Nobody wants to make money off of our guys stationed over there....and everyone wants them to have what they need. I bet you will save $$$ if you were thinking of donating something like this.

    Thanks for the suggestion, but we buy in bulk right from the manufacturer. We are the largest consumer of bore snakes on the West Coast! I don't think anyone is getting a better deal, unless they sell to you for ehat they bought it (and I don't think anyone will do that).

    We buy and ship 8 bore snakes to the serviceperson of your choice - they just have to recognize YOUR name - for just over $50.

    If you don't know anyone over there, don't worry - we have a long backlog of our nation's warriors that have been nominated without accompanying donations and are therefore waiting for them.

    I wasn't suggesting anything bad about giving to your cause...and that is an INSAINE low price. My wholesale is just under $10 for each "Hoppe's Boresnake" and to get it any cheaper you would have to buy a LOT!!!

    My idea is for those who aren't going to give to an organization....some just won't do it no matter what...and they may give to the troops using this idea.

    I will put something up in our store about your site and see if I can get you some traffic.

    Thank you! Our demand for these things is quite high.

    The troops like comfort items sure, but seem to consider these things lifesavers. And they can only look to us shooters to understand stuff like this. Civilian industry is sometimes ahead of the military in such matters. Not a hit, we just have to work together to best supply, and therefore protect, our sons and daugthers. We can do this little bit.

    Looks like the thread was started 4/25, about a month ago. Apologies if that's too old - I just found out about it and wanted to establish that http://ProjectBoreSnake.org/ is 100% legitimate and run by volunteers that don't draw a cent from the donations.

    I also want to thank the board moderators for allowing the thread.

    BTW, NRA has donated short articles in 4 of the magazines (would have cost thousands in ad space) and Col. Bob Brown's "Soldier of Fortune" magazine has helped too. Rotary International, through many individual locals, has donated thousands of dollars. We're starting to get some FOP groups to donate. Corporate donations welcome, of course, but most support comes from individuals like yourselves.

    Keep me in mind in six months when I am pounding sand trying to train the Iraqi army.

    Sounds like a good cause and I'm sure the Soldiers are greatly appreciative of the effort.
