new handgun for deer hunting

I have about 500-600 dollars too spend and am looking for a handgun too use for deer I do have a ccw in NY where I live what calibres are good and should I get a revolver semi auto or single shot like an encore.

    I believe the minimum Whitetail calibur is .357 Magnum. That being said I would go with a revolver in .44 Mag from S&W or Ruger.

    I like HobbyGuy's suggestion.

    By the way, I thought it was impossible to get a CCW in New York. How did you manage that??

    When SonDarren gets back from Afghanistan, he'll be stationed at Fort Drum, and would like a CCW.

    thanks for the advice guys and to Doug Wilson I live in western NY state and I have several friends who have ccw permits. I also heard it can be hard too get one in other parts of NY state. and I want too just thank your son for fighting for this country I commend him on that. Just get a pistol permit applicstion and fill it out that is all I did too get one this should be all your son should have too do also unless in NYC then it is almost impossible too get one.

    Might I suggest that you consider a 41 mag. More performance than the 357 & less recoil than the 44. However, they are more difficult to find as they are not as popular. It is my favorite for deer sized animals. In your price range a S&W or Ruger as has already been suggested.

    yeah I have seen some 41 mags I like them and if the recoil is less that may be good as well.

    I like the contender. There's no noise when you cock it, unlike the cuKLICK, of cocking a revolver. Also, I stuff two or three shells in the "cinch" on the cuff of my hunting coat, and can reload by the time the deer is done jumping from the first shot. Not to mention the lightness of the contender for a quick off-hand shot.

    It's the only pistol that I'll use for deer.

    I'd go .44mag, .41mag, or 10mm. I'd go .45lc if I was a reloader.

    thanks fishermanben my grandfather also has a contender in I think 44 mag he loves it and it looks like a nice gun

    I find no fault with the contenders. Have hunted with them in the past. At one time I owned (2) 6.5 JDJs, 309 JDJ, 30-30 AI, 300 Whisper, 35 Remington, (2) 338 JDJ#2s, and a 375 JDJ. I like them a lot. Have hunted quail with a 45/410 bbl on one.

    A contenders is easier to learn to shoot accurately than is a revolver - IMHO. When I started hunting with handguns, I started with contenders and used them for a few years. You cannot go wrong with them. In the rifle calibers they out perform any revolver.

    function go with encore (30-30 or 35)
    ruger superblackhawk (.44)is a good deal and fun also + can be had for $300 used

    I would suggest that you get the biggest caliber that YOU can hit your target with. If that is a .357 .41 .44 or the .500 s/w you and only you have to be able to shoot it accurately. My self I use the .41mag and .44mag and have had great luck with them, mostly because of shot choice and placement.

    Find what ya like and have a good time, those of us that use handgungs are few but we have more fun. [8D]

    thanks everyone for your help I will be going with a 44 mag probably a smith and wesson but I saw a nice ruger for $399.00 at a local gunshop. I think it was a ruger superblackhawk. I may get one off gunbroker though as a local gunshop does transfers.

    I've taken numerous deer with a hand gun. Using a .357, & .44 mag. but my favorite is my T/C Contender Super 14 in 7-30 Waters topped with a Leupold 4X.

    Have the encore in 7mm-08. It's a hoot out to 200 yd with a good rest. My 629 Smith has taken a few also. Have carried my Model 57 Smith (41Mag) but just haven't had the right shot with it. My first deer handgun was a Ruger super blackhawk and if you pull the trigger while thumbing back the hammer, it is quiet as a mouse.
