Nosler BT's will devestate any deer sized game out there...and at much further distances than 250 yards. You CANNOT go wrong with Nosler BT's. If you need further encouragement, ask JustC...or any other guy that has killed 100+ deer with them.

+1. I have had excellent results with BTs but not in .243 (.300WM & 06). You might also want to check into Hornady's Interlock/BTSP or perhaps their light magnums ... good luck.

    Shooting factory ammo?

    My first choice would be..

Federal PREMIUM VITAL-SHOK using either the Sierra GameKing BTHP (boat tail hollow point) or the 100 Grain Boat Tail Soft Point..

    Second would be..
Federal Fusion, 95 Grain Spitzer Boat Tail.

Hornady makes a 90 or 95 grain (can't remember) SST that should do the trick

+1 That's all I've used for the past eight seasons. [^]

These bullets work just as good as any "premium" bullet. Why spend twice as much for the same result? Nothing wrong with the premium ammo but it just isn't necessary.

What is the weight of the bullets you've been using.

Thanks for the advice guys, with so many options out there it's a little overwhelming trying to get the best bullet for the specific situation at hand. Thanks again.

[:D] Might I ask why? It's a great all around rifle, you can take anything from praire dogs to deer, about all I have the opportunity to shoot.

Good to see you posting again Huntingnerd. I started using Federal Fusion last season. I did'nt get a shot with my rifle but from what I've read their pretty impressive.

shooting a deer with a .243 is a bit more of a challange than a Pdawg or a coyote. but i can be done, get close if you plan on using a lite 90gr billet. shot placement will be key. 100-120 is what i would use. i have known guys to take elk with a 243's but they always shootem in the thinker.

I have used almost every 100 grain bullet Nosler,Barnes,Hornady on deer but my favorite is Sierra GameKings.Super accurate and can't remember ever losing a deer shot with a 100 grain Sierra.

Huntingnerd33 do you need someone to hunt with. I don't live to far the the western NE line. I sure would like to find some good hunting around here

NBT's and a close second is in fact the remington core-lokt. Those cheap azz core-lokt will shread some meat. Nor as accurate and not as "efficient" as a NBT though[}:)]

I'm looking forward to deer season and I would appreciate some input from you guys. I hunt on the open pastures in western Nebraska, mostly after muleys. I have a Savage 243. In the past I've used a 95gr remington accutip bullet, but I don't like how it doesn't expand very quickly. I'd like something that will shoot fairly flat and expand quickly but yet have enough knockdown power to reach out to about 200-250yds. Thanks

I don't see how you aren't getting good expansion from the accutips, unless you are shooting them waaaaay out there. They should expand to at least twice the diameter of the bullet. Now I realize that is only around 1/2", but that should be enough. I use Speer 100gr Grand Slams (I reload) and have never had a problem. They go all the way through and leave about a 1/2" hole through whatever I shoot. As said before, shot placement is key.[;)]

I killed my 1st dozen or so with as many shots with 100 gr nosler partition.
    There are better choices now.
I would 1st try Barnes to see if it shot well if not, than any good 90-105 grain would suffice
.243 is plenty, never wounded one until I "upgraded" to a 7mm mag and made a bad shot

This seems like an honest question that deserves a decent answer. In other words..I'm gonna leave it the he** alone.

OK,..when you run the top end of weight and length for any bore dia, you increase the sectional density of the projectile. Soooo, since whitetail die very easily and are thin skinned, you should drop BACK in bullet weight. IMHO with a 243, I would use a 70-75gr balistic tip of some sort, or a soft point that will fragment easily, like the corelokt. 250yds is still considered close range, and the bullet will still have PLENTY of ooomph at that distance. A lighter pill traveling faster will come apart very nicely for your purposes.

but then again, I shoot them with match bullets too, I'm just telling you which bullets are the most frangible from my experiences. Shrapnel expends energy in the body as well as peforates more internals making a much more ethical and immediate DRT shot.

I have handloaded hunting rounds with several different bullets and have been dissapointed with some of the performance after the animal was hit.
I was very dissapointed in the Nosler Ballistic tip as a deer/game bullet but it was one of the most accurate. It exploded when it hit the deer and nothing penetrated more then an inch.

I have taken my last 3 deer with Remington Core Lokt and it is what I will be useing again this season.

what range were you shooting? if you were up close, you will find that the NBT will explode. However, if you use it at 100yds plus, then it is much better. I took a doe in the neck with 7mm 150gr NBT at 425yds and damn near took her head right off.
