Deer covering themselves with leaves
A nephew report a deer covered itself with leaves to hide from hunters. I have never heard of this and was wondering if anyone else has observed this. Thanks.

Seems like the deer are getting smarter and the deer hunters are getting dumber. Next thing you know the deer will have vision blocking hair and will have evolved eyes that are equivalent to 40 power binoculars. What next, maybe chambum armor hair similar to the armor on the british tanks. Then the hunters will have to start hunting with crew served weapons, whats this world coming to? The next big leap in medcine just might be crises counseling for deer hunters. 0 -
I was deer hunting in the Qzarks in souther Missouri and had split up with my buddy with agreement to meet at the fork in the trail in the next valley over a couple of hours later.
I arrived there first and the area was clear for a few hundred yards except for a small amount of trees (one every 20 ft or so) and a gradual slope up on each side.
I sat down on the top of a nearby tree stump to rest approx 30 feet away in the open. I was wearing an orange cap, jacket and gloves.
After about 15 minutes, I heard someone walking up the path (a lightly traveled road) and a hunter I didn't know walked up about 50 ft away and stopped and stared at me (I nodded). He was carrying his rifle under his arm and looked about as tired as I was probably looking for his buddy also to go to lunch.
He then walked up directly next to me on the road, looked at me again and then looked up and down the path.
I greeted him by saying "had any luck?" whick promptly scared the cr*p out of him.
So I agree that covering a deer with bright orange would be a good disguise as long as they don't speak.0 -

I'm color blind. Depending on the sun or lack of, it's sometimes easier to see camoflauge than blaze orange!0 -
I couldn't believe that he hadn't seen me since he looked right at me twice at close distance.
I read later however that one out of every 10 men are color blind and cannot see the color orange!
(they ought to check that before they hand out a deer tag)
I guess the only for sure way is to put a wig on your cap and glue a large set of fake breasts to your jacket. Everyone can spot them.

I have seen deer that were lying down in the thick of the fall season when the leaves were dropping. If they stayed put they could get covered with leaves. Other than that I find it hard to believe that the deer would do it themselves for camouflage or concealment.
About 16 years ago I was deer hunting in Dundee NY. I was in my climber tree stand, with a full belly from a big early breakfast. About two hours in the stand I started getting drowsy, and my head started bobbing from my nodding off. I didn't have a safety strap on, and I was getting concerned that I might take a tumble out of the stand. I had already gotten one deer just after getting into my stand that morning, so I climbed down and sat at the base of the tree, and fell fast asleep. About forty five minutes later I woke up kind of suddenly and discovered deer standing all around me. There was about seven in all feeding all around the tree I was sitting against. A few of them I could have reached out and touched with my gun barrel. None of the deer had antlers, and I had filled my doe tag that morning, so I just sat there and watched them for several minutes. One large doe was real interested in my dead deer that was lying near by. She kept pawing the ground near the dead deer. One of the smaller deer walked up to me and started sniffing one of my boots. About that time I snorted like a buck, and all those deer took flight like they had nitrous oxide bottles attached to their backsides. The one at my feet jumped straight into the air and did a 180 degree turn in the other direction before touching the ground. I was laughing so hard my brother & law several hundred yards away could hear me.[:D]
