Not long ago, you took a stand by signing the petition 'No to HR 1022, "Assault Weapons Ban".' Many of us who are for the right to bear arms also enjoy outdoor recreational activities, such as hunting and fishing.
Today, I want to tell you about a Canadian mining corporation that wants to create one of North America's largest open pit gold and copper mines in the heart of Alaska's Bristol Bay - home to some of the last great wild salmon runs and rainbow trout habitat!
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) prohibits rock mining in Bristol Bay. Urge the BLM to uphold the prohibition and keep greedy miners out of Bristol Bay! >>
Americans have witnessed wilderness turn to wasteland too many times, depriving us from fishing, hiking, and swimming in these public spaces.
Alaska holds many of the the world's last vast wilderness expanses. A mining operation of this scale has the potential to turn the beautiful Bristol Bay landscape upside down.
The mine is estimated to cover about 15 square miles with an open pit about two miles long, a mile and a half wide and 1,700 feet deep. Over its lifetime, the mine would produce an estimated 3 billion tons of waste!
Bristol Bay is also a haven for sports fisherman and home to the world's largest Wild Salmon fishery, which generates nearly $320 million a year and employs about 12,500 people.

Bristol Bay provides pristine spawning grounds for all five species of Pacific Salmon. The freshwater lakes offer abundant habitat for Rainbow Trout. And Lake Iliamna, just south of the Pebble mining claim, is the largest body of freshwater in Alaska.
