Most likely to secede....

State is synonymous for country and for condition. Each state was seen as sovreign when they signed into the union. It was to be a confederacy, with state's rights being stronger than federal.

Then for a variety of reasons, some good, some bad, at the constitutional convention in 1787, the Articles of Confederation were trumped in favor of the Consitiution- which IS a great document but which violates the original premise of our union- and suddenly the Feds had supreme power.

Round about 1859, 1860, some folks started getting sick of this, thinking, hey, this isn't what we signed up for- the change was conducted behind closed doors and not put to a vote. So they said they wanted out. They had every legal right to leave the union; or as James Buchanan said, if I may paraphrase- The south has no right to seceede but I have no right to stop them.

Now I'm of mixed feelings on the North's move to stop succession and restore the union. I think we're much stronger unified than divided, but also see Lincon as a despot and tyrant. A decent man, too. It's an odd contradiction.

Yes, I think the South had the right to leave, as does Vermont or anyone else- and I wish CA, MA, and the other liberal hellholes would go first.

Gosh, I hate that saying "The South Will Rise Again!". Not meaning to step on toes here, but anybody that says the South will rise again is pure durn stupid.

Not really. If you can undertand the basis for Jefferson Davis' quote of "Truth crushed to the earth shall rise again" then you will better understand the "true" meaning of the "South shall rise again". In the minds of free men, especially, the Scotch-Irish, the South will most definitely rise again, as it is doing right this minute with the disgust and outrage Americans have for our one party system, the D&R Party. You might likely be a part of this "rising" and do not realize it.

The people that I hear saying "the South will rise again" are the ones who are the dumb, ignorant turd-for-brains racists who look down on all black people. As bad as America may seem right now, with Patriot Act, losing rights a bit at a time, it still beats Burma, Sierra Leone, Iraq, and 99.9% of the rest of the countries in the world.

I agree with your view of America. My point was to help clarify the undying spirit of free men.

Scared the peepee outta Lincoln and the Yankees when Stonewall was rampaging in the Shenandoah Valley and Lee was south of DC with Army of Northern Virginia.

Well for one it isn't going to happen. But, if it did Texas would probably be the only state that could pull it off. Speaking of natural resources, Alaska doesn't come close to Texas except in oil, and Texas isn't a slouch there ether. Texas has more port space along the Gulf for docking of ships for trade. Its crop industry is great, and I haven't heard too much about corn, rice, wheat, sugar, cotton, or soy being grown very much in Alaska. Texas's petrochemical industry along the gulf is second to none. Its population would be large enough to support a tax base. The military bases left behind, Ft Hood, Ft Sam, Ft Bliss, Lack Land AFB, NASA, and many more would be very useful to a new country. Texas doesn't need anyone elses water, wood, or cattle, and it doesn't snow there very much. It has more guns per citizen, and more miles of roadway. It has the best BBQ, hunting & fishing, and the best football team (The Cowboys). Texas is still the largest state in the US, because you can't consider frozen water & Ice a land mass. As soon as Al Gore's predictions come true, Alaska wont be any bigger then Delaware.[:D]

Kidding me right? Timber, oil, fishing, and they can grow some serious pot up there! [:D]

I'll give you they don't have the farms.

Heck, just drop a pot seed anywhere on the ground in Texas, and you will have a bush the size of a car in three months time.[:D]

They have a lot of fish in Alaska, but the enironmental wacko's will soon stop everyone from fishing them out. Unless it is on a mountain top the timber there isn't taller then 10', and it's all pine. There is a lot of oil, but it cost too much to get it to market.[8D]

All interesting views. The south does not have the heteregenous culture they used to. In very small towns I have seen it however the major cities barely reflect the "old south."

New England is an interesting case. In some ways it has exteme Socialist tendencies and in others there is a strong "less government" approach. Unfortunately you can't have both so I will rule New England out.

The old midwest (known as the rust belt) has driven out much business because the working people stood up against the companies and the companies went elsewhere. The unions have been rendered irrelevant by free trade and corruption.

The plains states still can exhibit much of the American spirit and some secession may be possible. I would tie Texas into this area more than in the south.

The west coast seems divided between Socialists, globalists and a small group of real Americans.

The key factor here is should a secessionist movement arise would the increasingly fascist federal government hammer it? or would it grid lock itsekf into inactivity?

Look at the ten years leading up to the Spanish Civil War. It looks remarkable like out time. The economic impact will be huge.

The folks in Idaho don't take kindly to big gov't.

They may not take kindly to big gov't, but they do take kindly to big welfare. Idaho and many other northwestern, central, and southern states get more money from the federal government than they pay in taxes. Accordingly, seceding does not make sense. Why leave a good thing?

The states that would do well to leave the union would be New York, Massachusettes, California, and several others. All of them pay more money to the federal government than they get back. Being part of the United States doesn't make economic sense.

Of course, I'm sure that all sorts of folks from the south would be happy to see New York and California go off on their own, but really, then who would pay the bills?

If any one state did, I think Alaska would be the one to have the best chance at making it happen.

My family were all loggers up there for the most part on my moms side. The ones where I lived grew to be pretty much the same size as in Oregon. Logging is a pretty big industry up there and has been for years. http://www.accentalaska.com/Industry.html

Rather than seceding it is more likely that the Union will simply fall apart. It will likely be quite a while but the economic collapse is inevitable. The value of the dollar is already less than 1/20th of what it once was & is falling off a cliff now. When the full impact of unfunded liabilities for Social Security, Medicare, Medical & pensions hit it is likely the entire economy & government will collapse.
At that point it is likely that smaller regional collections of states will emerge & that one of these groupings will consist of at least most of the Confederate States.
