Open markets are better if you are just talking about wealth generation for all parties. It is barely theoretically possibly to exploit have trade restictions on your partner, and being better off.
In the real world you will do better (both sides have more wealth or goods) by letting each make what they do best and trading. Also in the real world trade restrictions end up causing import restrictions on the goods youo produce.
We also will have to compete in the world also like it or not. better to learn how to be the best in somethings now, instead of forcing us to buy domestic now, and losing other more free markets
Take a macroecon class, and you will see.
Labor unions and people who do not want to compete want trade restrictions, even though in the long run it is probally in their best intrest.
That being said, we shouldn't export f-14s to Iran anymore. And I dont want Chavezs oil.
Also, it is not worth American Labors time to make flip-flops and cheap goods. we do MUCH better importing those, and using our labor to make Drugs, Aircraft, computers, etc0
