will any barrel fit any gun - or do they have to be fitted? talking about barrels from the same model of gun of course.

No. A Victor barrel should fit any Victor, a Citation barrel should fit any Citation, etc. etc. If it's the same model of High Standard, other barrels for the same model should fit. 0 -

if for some reason the gb anti competition blocker wont let you click it, just type it in and go to it.
rule of thumb is yes, but if its a real good match bbl, no. sometimes they need hand fitting. i'd say 90% will fit, 10% wont.
and of course you run into the problem of field grade bbls on match guns etc... you have to know the slides and sights as well.
nos replacement parts from say numrich arms, will need fitting. but, if its a used part from a gun used, odds are it will crossover to another used gun. if you try putting nos parts on a used gun, it will initially need its virgin fitting. follow me?0 -
well heres the rest of the story, might make it easier. i have a supermatic citation. it was topped with a red dot and the iron sights were removed. when i got it i noticed the scope was loose, and took it apart to find one of the holes in the barrel is stripped. looks like it has had a gallon of red loc-tite poured in it before. So now, I need either a set of stock iron sights, or a barrel or a way to fix the stripped hole.

get another bbl.
if you get another bbl from gunpartscorp, they only sell the bbl, not the locking lug. parts are ordered seperate. that locking lug is what needs to be fitted. some were pinned, and some were just screwed in and left. it gets tricky. best to find a used bbl. heck, you might want to use this moment to re-eval your need and go for a volquartsen match bbl.
you can get iron sights for that gun, pricey, and youll need to press fit in the mounting pins on both sides of the rear site bridge. the citation with the rear bridge sight is a pain in the butt when trying to open the slide. i'd avoid it.
fyi...since your rear sight is missing, a VICTOR bbl WILL FIT your gun. heck, get a victor bbl and your mounting days are made simple. see this pic:

What Bobski mentioned sounds good. I'd add swapping out the slide for ones with rear sights. I have a Supermatic Citation and it's the "Push Button" barrel take down so you can get a rainbow of barrels for it. If the barrel is a flush fit to slide and has a "mushroom" chances are it'll work on yours (102-107 barrels are inter-changeable [I hope I got the numbers right[:D]]). I've got bull barrels, tapered barrels (kind a like Lugers), Victors, Space Gun barrels and had few other maker's barrels (like Clark).
For your barrel I'd re-tap it with a larger thread (or have a gunsmith do it). It's a cheap fix if the bore is good and no other problem exists. Also not take the rail on and off like dude did to strip the tread in the first place. I frecon he used a wrond screws to set the rail (double threaded a few times and the treads went like the do-dos).0 -
slides are serialized to the gun.
by putting a mismatched slide on, the guns value will be destroyed even worse than the already missing ramp sight assy.
cost for a complete slide, let alone finding one, would cancel any economic gain attempted.
good point on saving the bbl. any true gunsmith can fix it, but based on the looks of the bbl, i'd say its seen some combat! [:)]
if you do decide to do the sight on slide job, youll need a slide assy from a 106/107 style 'tournament.'
to find one, look next to the hens teeth in any gun shop.0 -
if you just want to get this shooting a stripped screw hole can be rethreded to the next size screw 6x48 to 8x40 for example, it looks like someone tried to "make it fit" with a bastdard scope mount. 0
