We decided against traversing for a 4-season porch, and went instead with a ceramic tile. Travertine is just a low-quality marble that has been filled with marble dust where the material has surface cracks and voids. We brought sample pieces in to check for color, and one of our little Yorkies immediately began chewing a divot into a filled area.

The tile looks better, is completely sealed, and provides a bit of traction for people and puppies.

OTOH, we have a travertine mantle on one fireplace and it looks fine, and has held up well. It doesn't get any foot traffic or water splash, however.

travertine is sooo 8 years ago, its commonly used in houses that are bought and flipped within a month. Im no expert but i just heard that on the Flippin' Out show.

Travertine is still in style. It also scratches very easily. Use brick pavers for exterior applications. Most of the time tile just doesn't look right outside. Whatever you go with make sure its freeze proof, unless you live in Trenchtown. Jah Rasta.
