5.56MM vs 30.06
Did'nt this round replace the 30.06 in the NAM Era because you could carry more rounds and it did'nt kill outright like the 30.06 did? More casualties slow down an Army?

It was adopted so the girly-pies could shoot/qualify.

If I'm not mistaken, .308 replaced 30-06 and 5.56 replaced .308.
I think space and weight were considerations, but Lord knows what the real reason was for adopting 5.56.0 -
It replaced the .308 (or 7.62 NATO). The .308 had replaced the 30.06
The 30.06 is still the most versital round in existance.0 -
I saw it on the Discovery Channel. Said the .223 killed you slower. 0 -

I believe the 30-06 cartridge has spawned more different types or cartridges then any other round also.
Still the King when "All" things considered.0 -
If you look closely at the movie "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN" they're shooting .308 cal M1's not the true 1940's era 30.06 0 -
Its probaly just me. I just can't believe all the equipment a G.I. has to carry now a days.Deer and elk hunters are doing the same. I can remember going out on patrol with two meals, a change of clothes, and some snacks.Ammo, probably weighted two or three pounds. I went elk hunting with my son, son inlaw and his friends. They all had backpacks with enough stuff to last them a week. 0 -

And, no body walks any more. They all load tons of stuff on a 4-wheeler and head off for a week. They couldn't survive and old fashion live off the land hunt, much less in combat.0 -
