I can believe it....but I don't want to. (rant)
Went to the fireworks show tonight. Good show. First one I've seen in years. But what pisses me off more than anything is when they played the Star Spangled Banner right before (and during) the finale. The only people who were standing for the National Anthem were the people who stood through the whole show (and me). That irritates me beyond all comprehension. There was a drunk guy with a 3 or 4 year old kid sitting next to me, and the kid stood up, but the dad remained sitting. Jackasses...

Have you seen "The Good Shepherd"? There was one scene that struck me the most, some might find it offensive, I found it more than inspiring:
"- You know, we Italians have our families and the church, the Irish have the homeland, the Jews their tradition, the black persons their music. What do you guys have?
- We have the United States of America. The rest of you are just visiting."

I wouldn't be so hard on people not standing during a fireworks show. Most of the time when they play music during fireworks I can't even tell what song it is because of the fireworks. And playing the national anthem during the show is a little different than playing it before an event. 0 -
At the event we were at most people were standing, and I found that the few that were not were young (ie teens). There are still places in this country where people respect their flag and their country, but I've also seen plenty of places where it means little. Me and mine will not forget what it stands for, and respect will be shown by us. 0 -
