.303 Brit
This would be a good round for just about anything a .308 could handle right. Wondering if i could build an old enfield for a varmit gun just for kicks.

If you really want to play, have the Enfield re-barreled to 22cal, and neck the 303 cases down. There are several variations on this theme but all of them are in the 22-250/220Swift class.
Of course it's also been necked up and down to any number of other calibers.0 -

As a cartridge it is just as viable as any other. However, .303 was never very popular over here because we never had a service rifle in that caliber. Its in the same class as a .308 basically.
I like .303 because you get the feel of a large rifle cartridge (30.06 or 7.62x54r) in a smaller package (less grains of powder = saved $). Also, with the wealth of 7.62x39 around, there are plenty of cheap plinking bullets available if you're into reloading.0 -

Building a .303 is an excellent choice. All I have to do is recommend top quality ammo and not that surplus stuff. Not that its really that bad shooting surplus stuff; just that it can be really dirty to clean up and may have some loss of power from sitting on the shelf that long.
The standard load for the .303 british is a 174gr full metal jacket.
S&B, and I also believe privi-partizian and remington make excellent .303 british ammo. [I'd go with S&B]
If you want the ultimate hunting or target load I would go with hornady. I think also federal makes .303 ammo but I'm not sure on that.
I think the actual diameter of a .303 is ".311 inches"; so loading .308/30-06 bullets would not fly.
In terms of power I would put it in the class of 7.5 swiss; .308win; and 7.5 french cartridges. Although it may not be as accurate as the 7.5 french, it is very accurate itself.
I'm actually a fan of the .303 and would not recommend any cartridge conversion, as the .303 is a good round.
YES! it could handle anything a .308 can throw at it if you have your mind dead set on re-barreling it to .308 or something similiar.
They do have those stock conversions kits to 'sportarize' the enfield if you wish to go that route.

That's the one I own! I haven't seen it yet and won't see it for another 9 months or so, but as long as the South African Gov't doesn't lose my export permit application and as long as the US Gov't doesn't decide that this rifle is military surplus, then it should be mine before 2008.
Blue book says it's worth about $400 in mint condition. My agent in South Africa says it's worth about $10 (no that's not a typo...ten dollars) there. I hope I can get that gun here, because over there, the best thing is to use the stock for firewood!0 -
