My Antelope Hunt

I was just looking up my outfitter in Wy to see about hunting next year and noticed he used my pic from last years hunt in his advertising.
Kinda nice seeing it and replaying in my mind the whole hunt.

BTW - I'm the one on top left

    Not to rain on your thread, but I'm curious about Antelope hunting. Having grown in the day of "The American Sportsman" TV program where Curt Gowdy and a host of ce;ebrities belly crawled whispering to the top of a hill to see some Antelope, I had the impression they were scarce as Elk. Imagine my surprize in trucking out west to note that many area's are absolutely crawling w/them and you have be carefull in some areas or you might run over one. It looks to me like a succesful hunt could be done in about 30 minutes.
    I did learn some cool antelope facts over my western trucking carrer. The reason there 5 strand wire fence along all Wyoming Interstate Highways is that Antelope will not jump a fence. They'll run along a fence looking for place to crawl thru or go around. But they won't jump it even to they easily could.
    And Antelope are extremely curious critters. I used to pull in the truck parking pullouts on I-80 and tie a plastic trash bag to my CB antenna so it would blow in the wind. Then take a nap. Very often when I awoke there would be several antelope up to the fence line looking at the bag.
    This a variation of an old indian trick where they'd find (or dig) a depression in the ground to lay in. Then kick their feet above their heads to draw the antelope in.

    You are right on. My hunt took an hour. After spotting the goat I wanted, we drove about 2-2.5 miles up and around a flat top to get in front of them, which we did (good anticipation on guides part).
    We then belly crawled 20-30 yds to get to the edge and look down as we were above them. Several times during the crawl we literaly had to freeze as this herd had "lookouts" who upon their signal, would split!
    When we finally got in shooting position, the guide asked me 3 times if I didn't want to reconsider, go for a bigger goat, bigger rack. They wanted to make sure I would be happy with my animal.
    The guide then started whispering distance, elevation, hold under for point of aim. I've been shooting since I was 5 and I understood what and why they kept saying that, but, I asked for quiet, did my thing and sent a 117 gr Sierra SPBT from my 25-06 into the front shoulder from about 260 yds and down it went. It did not move an inch.

    Others back in camp, had fired as many as a 10 shots at ranges out to 400 yds, no hits. Lopes are not something you can treat like whitetails. You have to practice L-O-N-G range shooting and stalking as their eyes are like an 8X Scope and they ARE fast when they want to get outta Dodge!

    What is your opinion of the taste of antelope meat? I've heard that due to their sage-brush diet that it's not very good.

    never have eaten a speed goat that I liked, but fun to hunt.

    mine was from WY and it was IMHO less gamey than whitetail. When done in the crock pot, or in chili, etc....it was indistinguishable from any other meat. We hunted in sage brush and I expected the harsh taste,...but I was wrong.
