No Kidding! Kiwi... you need to get on your daughter about telling all her info to a stranger. She does not need to be talking to a stranger at all at her age.

kiwi, I would check with Mall security as well. Our mall has CCTV at the entrances and the major intersections of hallways and save the tapes for a bit. If you can see the guy on there, the local SO or PD might be interested in finding out who he is.

Or you can just sit back at the coffee shop area and see if he shows up again. These type of nut cases tend to have a pattern to them...that is why they get caught.

When I was younger my dad was playing softball and one of his teammates daughter almost got grabbed. They caught the guy dragging her by the hand towards some bushs. The father of the girl beat the crap out of him and then the cops showed up. My dads teammate got arrested.[V]

He later said it was well worth it though.

I have a 9 and 6 year old. They never leave my side anywhere outside of the house.

Sorry but leaving a small child in the care of someone who is in a wheel chair is not a wise move; kids can bolt and someone is a chair has no way to go after them. I have two daughters and since shopping malls, parks and playgrounds are major centers for those sick folks who "love" kids, I never let my girls out of my sight for a minute. It sounds like you were preoccupied with a fancy knife that you were not going to be able to buy anyway (since your wife appears to handle the finances) as well as your two other kids so you were spred too thin and had to hand off the seven year old to someone else. Kids need a lot of attention when they are outside the home and if you are going to be doing serious shopping I say leave them back at home where they are safe and you can do your shopping. My #1 rule to my two girls was NEVER talk to strangers.

Sounds like the guy was another walking mental wack job that the ACLU has put out on the streets. Can't get them help and put them in the "Home" anymore since they have civil rights.[;)]

Not necessarily true. I too am often in a motorized chair, or even
when afoot would appear to be an easy victim. When in fact, I am
almost always armed with guns and knives, very watchful, and have a
    low tolerance level for idiots.

from what 'Earl' has told your wife about himself, you should take this very seriously. whether or not what he said was true, don't take any chances, assume it's 100% true: "he was on trial for murder and kidnaping a little girl". with that in mind, when your daughter tells you that he didn't get any personal information from her besides her name, don't assume that 'Earl' doesn't in fact want to snatch your daughter, didn't figure out some details for himself, or doesn't in fact know all that stuff already. he could be stalking your daughter and decided to talk to her, and you wouldn't have known. if you want to be 100% safe, don't assume that will be the last you'll see of 'Earl'. I'll leave the security details up to you.

We teach our kids to be careful of all strangers - never engage them in conversation
unless we are there. Seems to have worked - all four got to grow up! We have a lot of 'homeless' wackos/excons/mentals drifting in and out of San Diego. They are - unfortunately - an unwelcomed part of our 'landscape!'[V]

... your wife should have excused herself and daughter and left - waiting for you else where.

I would do what Medic7 indicated. You should probably notify the local police. They may know something about him or had other reports. They could get access to video tapes from the store security or mall. Worst case is they blow you off but maybe this guy is real bad news and what you do could prevent someone from becoming a victim.

Thanxs for all the input. I will be watching for this guy and tapping some LEO networks I have. I feel like a door was opened that should not have been. Now its time for damage control.

I have 2 boys but my wife and I never leave them out of our sight when they were younger. Now 18 and 15, we still remind them of the danger. Let's not forget, sickos can also prey on boys and on some instances, on adults.

kiwi, thanks for the cautionary post. I'm looking at a picture of my own daughter right now and your post gave me chills.
    Angry, want-to-smack-a-pervert kinda chills.

    Good post.

If he got your last name,..he is already on the trail[V] Best you keep a VERY close eye on things for the next few months and work out something for her to exit school only when you arrive and to be with friends/adults etc. Maybe a little recon work in the parking lot or from down the street,...you may just see him again[:(!]
