Impressed with shotgun slug performance
This past week I took my annual fall vacation so that I could join fellow family members for a deer hunt in Tioga County NY. This was the opening of the NY Southern Tier big game season. Out of six who attended I was the only one who saw deer. One of the deer I took from my tree stand was a large doe early on opening morning. I was using a 12 gauge slug gun. I was shooting inexpensive ($3 a box) 2.3/4" Winchester rifled slugs through a smooth bore slug barrel. The gun has a Leopold Rifleman scope on it, and was sighted in on a 50 yard range. I was very impressed with how this gun and the ammunition performed. The doe I shot was a through & through heart shot at 319' confirmed by my GPS. The GPS said it was accurate within 3'. That is approximately 106 yards with virtually no drop in the slug from the point of aim.

These shotgun slugs are alien to me because I hunt in the South where rifles are legal. But based on your story and what I saw Ted Nugent do on tv the other day those 12 gauge slugs are a good way to kill a deer.0 -
I use a Rem 870 with smooth slug barrel. I shoot the Winchester 3" sabot slugs, 1oz 50 caliber slug at 1400fps. That sum-dog sounds like a cannon. Shooting with open sights I'm still shooting dead on the sights at 100 yards, I actually aim a little low under 75 yards.
I would like a scope but it just lines up so quick in the thick briars I hunt in.

12 gauge slugs are the projectile of choice with large dangerous animals like grizzlies at close range, and are kept by zoos for use in last ditch escape emergency use on lions, tigers, bears and similar animals. Yep, if you hit them, they will do for deer as well. 0 -
They are quite impressive. It depends on what range the gun is sighted in for of course. The 12 ga rifled slug drops like 10" at 100 yards. That being said, it is still a very effective shot at 100-125 yards.

I have a Browning BPS 12 gauge with a Leupold 2 1/2X scope. It's been a fine deer killing machine since 1980! I probably shot 30-40 deer with it over 25 years, from 10 yards to 125yards. In 2005 I moved up to an Ithaca Deerslayer 20 gauge with a rifled barrel and a Leupold scope too. I've been shooting Hornady SST sabot slugs and the set up seems to be a tack driver from 50-200 yards.

We can use rifles now in the area where we hunt in NY. My 17 year old daughter also hunted with us, so I let her use my Ruger M77 308. I used the slug gun so that she wouldn't get gun shy after shooting it. As accurate as it is it is also punishing on the shoulder. I use a Scoped Winchester 1200 pump with a smooth bore slug barrel. The scope rings are see through for close in encounters.
