Spades strategy is much the same as euchre, pinochle, hearts, etc. Once you play enough, you'll get to be able to tell what everyone has in their hands by the 4th trick[;)]0 -

here's how to play spades. nobody showed me, I had to figure it out myself. so I don't know if this is a "duh" or not.
for playing w/ a partner. playing heads on is a little different.
1. arrange all your cards by suit and in order. at least 3 cards of each suit will most likely be played before people start spading.
2. bidding non-spades suits: count on taking the A and K, count a Q as a 1/2 point because sometimes it gets spaded. everything less is filler.
3. bidding spades suits: same as above, but count the queen as 1.
4. now look at all the non spades suits again. where you don't have at least 3 cards of a suit, you can use your less-than-QKA spades in their place, and spade it before everybody else runs out of cards too and starts spading. so you're almost guaranteed to take it. you can't use the Q-K-A of spades to figure that bid, because you already counted them, you don't get to play them twice.
5. there ARE going to be 13 hands played. if the bidding doesn't add up to 13, someone is going to take a bag and some is going to bust. you might fudge accordingly; I never do, I rely on playing my hand best as possible and making it work by fudging the playing, not the bidding.
example: if your hand is
K-Q-8-3 SPADES
A-Q-3-5-4 CLUBS
K-J-3-9 HEARTS
(no diamonds)
then you would look at your cards and add up the bidding in this order:
1 on the hearts, 1.5 on the clubs, 2 on the spades,
you got the 8 and 3 of spades to spade with; you have 3 open spots on the diamonds, so you'll use both. count 2 on those.
total bid: 6.5
should you count that Q as a 1 or not? here's where you start to learn how to fudge your playing. you got more diamonds to dodge a king (which would screw up your bidding if you lost a Q you counted on), but you also have a litle more diamonds than normal, so after the K is played the diamonds might start getting spaded and your Q is worthless. if you had 3 diamonds, I'd count the Q. but you got 5, so don't.
YOUR BID IS 6.
example: if your hand is
K-Q-8-3-5-4-9 SPADES
A-K-Q CLUBS
K-J HEARTS
9 DIAMONDS
bid 0 on the diamonds, 1 on the hearts, 2.5 on the clubs, 2 on the spades,
since you got 3 empty spots on the diamonds and 1 on the hearts, and 5 filler spades, count on 4 for spading.
someone else will play the A, you throw the J; then you play the K; next heart you spade. you have to be aware of how that will work in order to bid, cuz this scenario happens all the time.
that adds up to 7.5
YOUR BID IS 7 OR 8. you decide.
-ADVANCED BIDDING-
follow the bidding rules above, but for each card more than 3 you have, that tells you that's one less card of that suit someone else has, so they're likely to start spading that suit: start taking off your bid.
for example, one suit you have is
K-Q-3-7-5 DIAMONDS.
I wouldn't bid any of them. someone else will put down the A, but taking off 3 bids from that suit, leaves you with zero.
A-K-Q-3-7-5 DIAMONDS.
bid the A as .5, because it is led first for that suit, that's something. it might not get spaded. go on bidding the other suits and decide that one later.
there's more fudging, but once you get the hang of how this works so far, you'll figure out the rest.
other tips:
take your bids as soon as possible without stepping on your pard's toes, then the rest of the game will be getting rid of all your high cards and extra spades to avoid the possibility of taking bags.
if you have two .5's, bid 1. if you take the first one, toss the second one when you get to it.
NEVER bid nil if you have a A, K, or a (Q with not many other cards)
example: Q-4-6-3-2 ok to bid nil.
example: Q-2-10 pretty iffy. don't do it unless you're very good at fudging.
example: Q-6 you're crazy if you try to pull that off.
only bid nil as a strategic attempt, later on in the game if it looks like you're not going to pull ahead.
double blind nil: only if you're about to lose cuz you don't have anything else to lose.
after you do this for so long, you'll become aware of either throwing off suit or spading as a means to fudge. that's the most important skill next to bidding correctly. but that, you can only get by practicing.
that's how I play spades. I did that and beat all my friends, but going on the internet there's a lot of players who play it different: to screw you up. I don't know how they plan it, but they do it.
either that, or your partner sucks and your rating gets dragged down.
