Drilling and Tapping
What is an agreeable price to get three holes drilled and tapped in a MkII receiver? I plan on having this done to my Ruger and I'd like to have an idea of what it'll cost before hand so I know if I'm being stiffed.

Since we're in agreement about the subject, let me add this. The B-square mounts aren't ugly. They won't permanently alter your firearm. They're accurate. And finally, they're about as inexpensive as drilling and tapping. The one I have cost about $45.00 at Midway last time I looked.0 -

Everyone has to learn sometime. If you must do it yourself, practice a few times on some scrap metal first. Find a way to make
the gun rock steady solid in place so it won't shift when the drill
touches it. A drill jig is a great investment if you want to drill and tap on a regular basis. Treat the tap gently, don't turn it roughly like using a screwdriver.0 -
I've worked with a lot of close tolerances not as clsoe as you but I have to tell you .00001 of an inch is extreme. I call BS on the .00001 tolerance for modern machining operations.
First due to precision equipment limitations, most modern CNC equipment won't even hold those tolerances, and due to tool wear you could not maintain that tight a clearance on the work anyway.
To complement the range of boring tools, an axial type fine boring head provides micrometer adjustments in increments of .0004 inches and vernier adjustments of .0001 inches on bore diameter. Precision manufacturing and super-fine adjustments permit operating speeds of up to 30,000 rpm / 4,920 sfm. The development of such tools further reinforces the importance of precision-both in the tool and the holding device.

Tolerance Allocation by Precision Factors. It is well known that tolerances increase with the size of the parts being produced. A common rule of thumb assumes that for a constant level of precision, the tolerance increases with the cube root of the nominal dimension. For example, to machine an 8.0 in. diameter part to the same precision as a 1.0 in. diameter part, the tolerance would be doubled (cube root of 8). The Precision Factor Allocation rule in the Analyzer is based on this rule of thumb. Proportional scaling is then automatically used to meet assembly requirements
To produce fine finishes and maintain long and predictable tool life while performing high-speed applications, you must run balanced tooling. Part of understanding the balance issue is knowing what the maximum "un-balance" your machine can withstand. As a general rule of thumb, it is accepted that a maximum of 3 grams per millimeter of unbalance is permitted in HSM toolholders. But, at very high spindle speeds (30,000+ rpm); it is not uncommon to require closer to just 1 gram per millimeter. This can be compared to a standard, generic endmill holder, which can have as much 250 grams per millimeter unbalance. Depending on the actual rpm used, this can be the difference between catastrophic failure and complete success. Balanced tooling will yield better results at any rpm, but becomes an absolute necessity when considering HSM, having the ultimate impact on productivity, quality, consistency, predictability and safety.0 -

Neather can you. .00001 is 10 millionths of an inch. 0001 is 1 10 thousandths of an inch!
Micrometers are graduated in either .001 or .0001 increments, and indicator mics in .00005. Even electronic super mics don't go down to .00001

That would be swell, but not everyone owns a mill.
A drill press would suffice and be a welcome addition to the shop. If a mill was required to drill and tap a hole this country would have came to a standstill decades ago. I know a guy who still uses a hand crank drill press!
I guess I am just a do it yourself type guy. I would rather build my own stuff including special tools,fix my own cars,fabricate most anything. I don't even go to a car mechanic unless it is something I don't have the time or ability to fix.

Since you're math challenged,
.1 = 1/10 (1 tenth)
.01 = 1/100 (1 hundredth)
.001 = 1/1,000 (1 one thousandth, typical calibration of calipers and general purpose mics)
.0001 = 1/10,000 (1 ten thousandth)
.00001 = 1/100,000 (1 one hundred thousandth or 10 millionths, your magic number)

I could, and would, do it myself, but all of my tools are in Wisconsin. So, 45 for all three is more reasonable than the 200 that it would cost for me to drive back and do it myself. 0 -
