Starting Smoking
Serious question for all of you that smoke, don't smoke, are trying to quit, were successful at quitting or whatever:
At what age did you start smoking?
My parents didn't smoke, so I would have had to try to buy cigarettes somewhere when I was younger. When I was too stupid to know better, I was too poor to spend the money on cigarettes. Then after I was 18 and had a little money, I was old enough to realize how stupid it would be to smoke. From talking to my friends, it seems like those who have the most trouble with quitting started when they were between 13 and 15 years old. I don't know where this is going, but I'm trying to see if it really is a trend.

STARTED CHEWING SNUFF AT 10.NOW I CAN;T SEEM TO QUIT.THAT WAS 30 YEARS AGO.
I am a diehard skoal user, enjoying it so much i even said i would never quit till i had health problems.About a month ago started having a persistant sore throat and the tobacco aggravated it greatly.Shined a flashlight in my throat while looking in the mirror and it looked ugly back there.Scared me so bad i vowed to give up then and there.I prayed to the Lord above, ill do my part if you heal me.This makes one week so far,the first few days are the worst, then it gets better.Im using nicotine gum thats helping.TODAY in the mail i received HOOCH herbal snuff i had ordered. This is not the alfalfa based stuff. This stuff looks, feels and tastes like the real McCoy.Cayenne pepper is one ingredient which gives it a good burn but theres no pepper taste. There is no nicotine. WWW.HOOCHSNUFCOM check them out.At $3.25 a can its worth a try.My throat is starting to look and feel much better.0 -

Bobby Waltz got me started smoking in the fifth grade. I was at his house one day after school and we hid in the dog house and smoked a cigarette. First time I enhaled cigarette smoke.
I quit in 1985, the year before my son was born. Hardest thing I ever had to quit.

Was in junior high some time. Had stole butts out of the ashtray of the house and car before then but once I got into junior high you could just walk into the pool hall and have some dude buy you a pack for a couple extra bucks then what they were worth. I have tried to quit a couple times and have made it a couple months before, its just 10x as hard to quit when you drink alcohol.
I could buy a lot of ammo if I quit smoking though[?]0 -
Started at about 14, about 1971. Neither of my parents smoked, but it was the cool thing to do. When Dad finally caught me, he figured it'd be a good lesson to make me smoke the whole pack, in hopes that I'd turn green. Too late, I was already well accustomed to them. 0 -
I didn't start smoking regularly and in earnest until I was 16 and got my own wheels and source of income but I had smoked off and on since age 12.

They have medically proven that if you start smoking before the age of 18 years old (while still developing), Nicotine becomes encoded into the human brain as a chemical that the body needs to survive. It is supposed to be a lot harder to quit if you start before the age of 18.
I agree that the early one assumes a habit the harder it is to break but I would certainly like to see your source information on the red statement above.0 -
So maybe its only been 5 to 6 weeks since I stopped smoking after over
65+ years. So far, no problems . People smoking around me dont bother me. For a very short time, 10 seconds, once in a while I get reminded
but so far not enough to bother with starting up again. So, maybe I am just lucky having almost no problems. No extra eating or gum chewing,
nothing unusual. Maybe at a later date something will show up. Hope not. Yeah, gave away the last of my cigars yesterday. Wish me luck in
keeping up with this. Seems to damn easy so far.0 -
I started at 13, was at 2 1/2 packs a day from the age of eighteen to 42, just stopped a month ago with chantix, a few slips along the way ( 5 smokes in a month) but looks like i will make it. 0
