Jeopordy Question on US Military
Did anyone watch jeopordy tonight ? I think they got an answer wrong, tell me what you guys think. Here is the question, catagory was "US Military" - question was "What branch of the US military uses more fuel than any other?" They said the answer was the Air Force. I disagee with this because as far as I know the Navy flies just as much as the air force but also uses ships that burn a tremendous amount of fuel. Notice the question asked specificy stated "FUEL" and not "GAS". One of the contestants answered Navy and Alex said to him "most of the navy's ships are nuclear". Well nuclear IS fuel. I think Jeopordy is wrong, my opinion is that the Navy uses more FUEL than the Air Force.......opinions ???

youd think the army... with all its vehicles and generators running, would max everyone...but you do have a point about nukes. only, nukes dont deplete as fast as conventional.
airforce jets are bigger and burn more and stay aloft longer and travel further than navy planes. i think a.f. is correct. heck, it costs 5000.00 just to get a c5 to 1500 feet on one take off.0 -
They should all be required to produce all their energy through "green" methods.
Perhaps if they did, this terrible global warming would be fixed, and we could spend our time redistributing the wealth.

I would think the nuclear fuel wouldn't really factor in since it doesn't have to be replenished anywhere near as often. According to this source, 70% goes to jet fuel.

I too thought that answer was out to lunch. The fleet uses a lot of fuel and if the AF uses the most, I would like to see what we have to show for it.

The over spray from specs trying to de-ice the aircraft is enough to clear the taxiways and runway. Us crew chiefs just spray the JP-8 everywhere just for kicks.0 -

Really the only nukes running around in the Navy are the Carriers (11) may be 75 or 80 nuclear powered subs, and a handful of newer ships that are also nukes (maybe a dozen) and then you have about 175-180 ships that are not nukes. If you've ever made a deployment aboard a nuclear powered aircraft carrier (I have made three) a common memory is the "unrep" or underway replenishment of either our ship with supplies, or more commonly the smaller ships in the battle group would come along side and take a few hundred thousand gallons of fuel from us if there was not a oiler near by. 0 -
has anyone ever seen up close the size of the mega cargo jets engines? im tellin ya...those big ones are moving around the world 24/7. i use to position them worldwide. and because of the huge cost, all c-5 an c-5 type aircraft must be reported to the CIC daily! he knows daily where they are and what they are doing. the af cargo jets are forthe most part forming and reforming military op plans overnight in some cases. its a pretty impressive operation. can anyone say...JAT/TT?

"In fiscal 2005, DESC will buy about 128 million barrels of fuel at a cost of $8.5 billion, and Jet fuel constitutes nearly 70 percent of DoD's petroleum product purchases." says American Forces Information Service News Article by G. J. Gilmore. [3]

This is just talking in dollars, not gallons. I wonder if the jet fuel is lots more expensive than gas and diesel? If it is then I my mind they don't use as much as the rest, they just cost more.0 -
The Air Force has had the lead for some years.
The majority of ships in the Navy are NOT nuclear powered.0
