Just finished a job in Sloan, Iowa where they ran their GP 9 right off the end of the track. Made it about halfway across the tank before it stopped! Guess I'll have to start carrying a camera on the job...

Lucky it was only grain, that is grain right?
I always have my camera with me either in my truck or the fire truck. It's nice to be able to take one or two shots of things that you come a cross.0 -

I know a guy that did that to a GP9. The guy at the pit told him on the radio "Take it south to the Run-a-Round Track". With 13 cars going from the pit to the track and half the cars already on the track, this guy fell asleep while operating the locomotive and drove it off the tracks. The engine was in the lead (heavier than the cab end). He drove it right off the tracks just before the crossing.
"Mac" was an old black man that always moved slow like he was half asleep. I guess this time he was a little more than half asleep. Union protected him.0 -
In that second picture, the guy dumping the cars had trouble learning how to interpret a switch. The guy was was from East St. Louis. It was explained to him to "follow the open rail" through the switch. The rail, either the left rail or right rail, whichever is NOT touching the switching rails, is the track the cars will go to.
When this kind of accident happens, the first "argument" is that the switch popped open while the cars were going through it. After this happened twice in two days everyone knew it was a personnel issue. After taking the guy out to a switch and questioning him, we knew where the problem was.
Also saw this kind of accident happen once when local kids flipped the switch while the car was fitting over the switch. Half the car went down one track and half the car went down the other track.

In the first picture, a guy went down and unlocked the derail so the railroad could spot some cars. It was also at night. When the railroad arrived, they asked "Is the derail unlocked?" The guy said "Yep." Well, it was unlocked, but the steel slab was still over the rail. The switchman never looked at the derail as he walked past it.

Looks like that right hand point has had a wheel down behind it at one time. That stock rail is really bent. 0
