Background check delayed....

The topic Unique ID # from ATF reminded me of something and I have a question. I was recently a resident of Illinois, have lived their my whole life, I have since moved to Oklahoma, got a license to carry a concealed weapon, and thought it was time for a new smaller .45. So I went to a few places and finally found the one I was looking for. I was exicited that I was going to be able to leave the store the day with my new gun instead of waiting 72 hours like you have to in IL on a handgun purchase. Then I was told my background check had been delayed.......I was like what the ........I own twenty one firearms and this was going to make 22. Never was denied or delayed. Ever. What is the deal? I mean a couple days later they called me and was able to pick up the firearm but do I have the right to know why my application was delayed?

    It may have nothing to do with you, there may have been a computer problem on their end. I was at a shop a few weeks ago and the same thing happened to a guy that was buying a pistol. The shop owner told him it was not uncommon for this to happen. He said sometimes it is due to computer problems and most of the time the approval comes back in a few days.

    Delays occur when records have to be searched manually.

    Missing Records
    Currently, there are over 30 million records missing from the NICS:

    ? Felony Records: The typical state has automated only 58% of its felony conviction records. The FBI estimates that 16 million of 39 million felony arrest records lack final disposition information.
    ? Mental Health: 33 states keep no mental health disqualifying records and no state supplies mental health disqualifying records to NICS. The General Accounting Office (GAO) estimates that 2.7 million mental illness records should be in the NICS databases, but less than 100,000 records are available (nearly all from VA mental hospitals). States have supplied only 41 mental health records to NICS. Combined with the federal records, the GAO estimates that only 8.6% of the records of those disqualified from buying a firearm for mental health reasons are accessible on the NICS database.
    ? Drug Abusers: The General Accounting Office estimates that only 3% of the 14 million records of drug abusers are automated (not including felons and wanted fugitives). States have supplied only 97 of those records to NICS, which the GAO estimates as representing less than 0.1% of the total records of those with drug records that would deny them a firearm.
    ? Domestic Violence: 20 states lack a database for either domestic violence misdemeanants or temporary restraining orders or both. 42% of all NICS denials based on restraining orders come from one state - Kentucky - which does the best job of automating temporary restraining orders (TROs) from the bench. The Department of Justice (DoJ) estimates that nearly 2 million restraining order records are missing from the database.

    By contrast, the private sector has no trouble making instant background checks that cover a lot more information. Background Check & Search includes Current phone number, address, address history for 30 years, age, birthdates, household members, relatives, associates, property ownership, lawsuits, marriage, divorce, criminal records check, sex offenders, terrorist watch, bankruptcy, tax liens, ...

    Think about credit card approval systems. They are run by the private sector, and everyone's credit card purchase gets approved or declined instantly.

    I wrote BATFE a letter about my delays. They wrote back and told me there was a felon with the same name as me and this was the reason for being delayed every time I bought a gun.
