quote:Look at where it was at 1,2,3,4,5 years ago. it is now much higher than it was and the 3% drop doesn't not negate any of these past gains.

It is natural for it to go up and down. The net gain has been positive for decades and that is what matters.

    Bullseye!!!!

Ho-hum...this will happen from time to time..
Exactly, just let it go, but keep an eye on it just to see if something develops. There really is nothing here yet, but that doesn't mean it can't turn into something. A person just wants to be prepared to move if the opportunity arises.[:)]
Exactly. The market could pick up this much and more tomorrow.

Granted, a 400-point drop is a bit unusual, but it wasn't that long ago (end of Clinton, beginning of Bush) that 250-point daily swings on the NASDAQ wasn't entirely uncommon.

I'm not suggesting the market will pick up 400 points tomorrow, there was some horrible economic news delivered today and the price of crude spiked, but really, in the scope of things, this isn't any huge deal.

    Oh gosh you're so funny.

I'm married. Go back to Rosey Palm, because that's all the woman you'll ever see.

I told you that runforest is a female.

No one else would talk like that.

By the way, y'all both sound rather juvenile.

Don't listen to real-estate Agents, they are in it for the commissions, do you own legal research of county records.

The only investment care to study is real-estate, sales in January are at a 13 year low that takes us back to 94 level, the last serious downturn was 90-91 and the adjustment was 35-45% this new correction is only down 14%, my estimate is prices dropping another 21-31% by 2010.

There's a new boomer group called Eco Boomer, thats two generations children. Parents are the delayed birth baby boomers, and Gen X, this demographic group is said to be 70-80 million strong

Willing buyer, willing seller doesn't include all cash pricing at court house steps, not recomended for the Nescient.

IF my wife was fat, it would have no bearing on whether or not I loved her.

That, you immature child, is something you'll never understand.

Now, hurry, go cry to a moderator that I called you an immature child.

    BUY BUY BUY!!!!!!!!!

The local investment club I am a member of voted last night to take a position in BRK-B which is Berkshire Hathaway B class. Yesterday's drop let us get it at a discount of $3479 a share. It is already up $50 this morning!

BRK-A is worth over $105,000 per share but we couldn't afford to buy even one share of it!

Thursday after market close Berkshire releases its annual report. Based on market action after Berkshire's annual report releases of past years we are hoping to make some $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I don't no zlich about stocks, so bear with my question. I heard a rumor that Asian stocks have been pumping the market, and that the Asian stocks have slipped around 15%.

    Yes and no.

We live in a global economy. So, when Asian stocks take a dive, a lot of American investors have assets in the Asian stock markets. Some of those investors are American companies and some of those investors are holders American mutual funds that specialize in foreign stocks (I happen to take part in one of these).

Same goes with European stocks. What happens in one market can have an effect on the next. It can become a cascading effect.

Here's a good example. Back in the late 1990s, there was a rather large earthquake in Asia that damaged some rather significant manufacturing plants in Taiwan and Korea. This damage caused an immediate shortage of computer memory chips. Memory suddenly got very expensive. Companies like IBM, DELL, HP, Apple, etc. all had to suddenly jack up prices because their suppliers suddenly couldn't keep supply to meet with the demand.

What happened? The Asian stock markets took a dive. Then these American companies suddenly had a poor outlook on profits, and their stocks took a dive, driving down the American stock market.

Does this make it any clearer as to why one stock market can impact another?

What spanielsells explained, when combined with Bernanke's comments about signs of a future recession had the effect of yesterdays drop.

There have been much bigger drops in the past. Without doing any research I seem to recall drops of around 30% during the 1970s. These drops were followed by even bigger increases.
