Requested: Opinions on the Stevens Model 200

I'm in the market for a varmit rifle for an upcoming hunting trip in May. I've been looking at different rifles for a little while, in the price range of $300.

I was in a local gunstore the other day and a Stevens model 200 in .223 caught my eye. I liked the way it felt, it had a nice action and the price was right.

So, what have been people's experience with this rifle? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks again!

    Funny you should ask. I'm buying one in the next few days. I've gotten plenty of opinions on them. Each one says they are the best value on the market. Sub MOA accuracy for next to nothing. Or local shop has them for $259. An unbeatable deal.

    I looked at one last winter. It was brand new and was selling for $250 in 308 caliber. I wish I had bought that gun. Just a Savage at a less expensive price in a less expensive stock.

    Yeah, button rifled, floated barrel, a great action, just not the accu-trigger that some people don't like in the first place.

    A buddy has one in 223, not completely sighted in yet, but will group under MOA.

    In that price range, buy the 200 with confidence. Extremely accurate and light weight. But once again, the savings over the Savage is the cheaper stock (pretty rough) and lack of accu-trigger, which I don't particularly like anyway.

    Optics, I always suggest Burris Signature anything. Best scope for the money out there. Then the Burris Fullfield or Leupold. If price is a problem, then I suggest the Bushnell Banner series of scopes, also a good scope for the money. I have a Stevens 200 in .243 as my "beater"/truck gun and have the Bushnell Banner 6x18-50 on it. Had zero problems. Nice and bright/clear, even to 18X and always on zero. Took a coyote a few weeks ago at 325yds (stepped off) and wouldn't hesitate for taking one much farther away with this gun. I've got about $350 in the whole setup, rifle/scope, what more can you ask for from a truck gun.

    I have the Stevens 200 in .223 with a Sightron S1 3-9x40, and Talley one piece lightweight rings. That baby shoots better than a previous A-bolt. It will not win a beauty walk, but who cares. Mine was bought for shooting not sitting around looking pretty. I shot a five shot group at 100 yards resting on the hood of my truck, without bags just leaning across the hood, and you could cover it with a quarter. ANd by no means am I a marksman, heck I have missed a deer at around 75 yards with a 7mm mag. Could have been the scope, how many time have you heard that? I picked up the Stevens at Gander Mtn in Huntsville for $279.00 plus tax.
    As for ammo it loves Black Hills 50 grain v-max, 55 grain nosler Ballistic tips do well also. Keep away from anything less that 50 grain though.
