Yes, and besides the artery, which you might or might not hit, but would certainly kill if it was hit, there is the lung which you certainly would hit. A collapsed lung is a good way to die too.
Another classic in the Westerns is when a guy is shot in the hand, and they just wrap a bandana around it like it will be ok in a few days.
Can you imagine the damage a .45 slug would do to all the little bones in the hand, not to mention the chance of gangrene? A shot like that would require hours of orthopedic surgery today.
I know that in your life because of your job you have seen some pretty raw stuff. And I respect you for having done that. But I have a question about your comment in red above. Let me tell you a story about me so that you can answer my question about your statement.
When I was young, wild and stupid (as compared to now, old, mild and only half-stupid) on three occasions I have a collasped left lung. First time it was complete and hospital cut a hole in my chest, put in a suction tube which caused a vaccum, and my lung re-flated and healed. Second time Dr. said lung was only partially collasped and I should go home and take it easy and it might heal on its own. It did.
The third time I was still young, wild and stupid and one evening my young daughter trashed her bedroom. When I walked in I started yelling at her and suddenly felt that oh so familier pain: the third collasped left lung. I went in and laid down and tried to get pain to subside and hoped wife would get home. Wife got home and and I told her what had happened. Wife asked if I wanted to be driven to hospital. We had very high deductible medical insurance at the time so I said I would just lay there until the lung re-inflated (as it had done the second time I had a collasped lung).
I laid there all evening and through the night into about noon the next day. At that point I was ready to give up, because of the pain, and wanted to go to the emergency room. But wife and daughter had gone shopping. So I got into my car and started driving to the emergency room. I haden't eaten for about 18 hours so I stopped at McDonalds and walked in and ordered a chicken sandwich which I went back to my car and ate. I arrived at the emergency room and went to the checkin. I told check-in clerk I was there for a collapsed lung. Without batting ann eyelash, she checked me in to the emergency ward. The nurse asked me what was wrong with me and I said my left lung is collasped. She kinda snickered to herself and stated "we will have it x-rayed". After x-ray showed my left lung to be totally collasped to the point of it all laying on the bottom of my chest cavity, the same nurse got all worried and paniced and put me in a wheel chair and summoned the emergecny room Dr. They started treating me and I overheard the nurse telling another nurse (in amazed tones) he just drove himself to the emergency room with a collasped lung and STOPPED FOR A CHICKEN SANDWICH! Same nurse later asked me if I could breath OK and I told her "yes" if you quit asking me questions that make me worry about it.
My question to you is "How much danger was I in and what would have been your reaction had you been that nurse?"

You were in a lot of danger. What you had is called a spontaneous pneumothorax, or, a lung that just collapsed all on its own, without assistance from a knife or bullet wound.
We were taught that these happened primarily to skinny people, could happen if a person were coughing or yelling.
If I had been that nurse, and you told me you had a collapsed lung, first I would have asked you what made you think that. Of course I would have been skeptical. Then when you told me it had happened before, I would have listened for breath sounds in both lungs with the stethoscope, I could have quickly confirmed your remark.
Also the many collapsed lungs which I saw caused the patient a great deal of distress, extreme difficulty breathing.
I have seen many of those chest tubes put into patient's collapsed lungs, that is really a sight to see, a doc shoving a 3/4 inch diameter tube into someone's chest. That has got to hurt.
I bet that nurse did panic when the xray confirmed your statement, which she had been more or less ignoring.0 -

I've rode out of the woods, after a bad mountain bike crash, with badly brushed shoulder and some very bad cuts.
But dam Fox a collapsed lung[:0][:0] and you drove yourself.
I never stopped at MacDonalds either when I was on my way to the ER.

Well, no. I'm really a soft cookie. I just was really, really hungry for a McDonalds chicken sandwich. This was the early 90's and they had just recently been introduced in the KC area. That plus the fact that, being a tightwad, I wanted to try and avoid the emergency room payment. In addition, wife and daughter had gone shopping and I had to depend on myself.

I have a buddy up in Jersey that collapsed a lung, wile driving a dump-truck. This all happened in about 1975.Long before "drug-testing".
He said he was going back to the "pit", empty, and smoking a fat joint. He told me he took a huge toke,,, and started coughing his head off. Just then, he went over the RR-tracks. Within 2 min. he was totally incapacitated! He pulled-over, and waited for someone to come by, and flagged them down. Their were VERY FEW people with "car-phones" , and
No ONE had "cell-phones". Doc told him."another 1/2 hr. you'd have died, sittin by the road".
Often, when 1 of your lungs collapses, the other cannot keep-up. If you begin to panic, and "hyper-vent"...[xx(][xx(][xx(]

Back in the early 90's I didn't know. But I pretty much avoid McDonalds now. My 25 yearold daughter is more hardcore than me about them donating money to anti-gun causes to the point that she doesn't even want to hear the word McDonalds around her. She's raising her son to feel the same way.0 -
