Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.
"I used gun control as mayor," he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But "I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."
He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.
Addressing another potential trouble spot with conservatives, Giuliani spoke in favor of a border fence, saying, "You have to have secure borders, you have to have a fence, and the fence I think has to be a highly technological one."
The nation needs to know, he said, who is coming into the country and why. But he provided scant details on how he would deal with illegal immigrants already in the country. Citizens, he added, should be able to read and write English.
Giuliani was to make an address Monday in Silicon Valley and he was to appear Tuesday at an agricultural fair in the Central Valley.
Asked when he would make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination, Giuliani said: "Well, formally announce? I don't know."
He then alluded to making an announcement in multiple locations "so we get more attention" but provided no details.

This statement alone proves he's in the same place as those who support gun control but want votes. They think as long as they say they support hunting, they are reassuring gun owners. The second amendment was not put in to cover hunting, it was put in to cover self protection from an overzealous government or others wishing to harm you.
Heck, they can get us back to hunting with muzzle loaders and still be protecting hunters and hunting, and that is their back door policy.

I saw an interview with Guiliani on Fox and he was asked about gun control. He said it worked great in New York. He supports gun control. No way am I voting for him, NO WAY !!!

Gun control only works if the legislation targets the non law abiding citizen. Chances are in New York as with many big cities they have a lot of illegal firearms trafficing. Seems much of the legislation goes to people that are responsible. 0 -

Guiliani and McCain are two of the main reasons Hillary Clinton will be our next president.
I haven't liked Guiliani since he let his son run amuck at his mayoral inauguration. My opinion of him has deteriorated since then. I can't hold my nose hard enough to vote for Guiliani.
There are things I like about, and even admire about McCain, but I don't want him as my President.
I don't intend to sit out the election, but if Guiliani or McCain is the Republican candidate, I'll vote for some third party candidate, even if it's the communist. This will have the effect of a "NO VOTE".
Losing my vote is no big deal to the Republicans, but I'm afraid there are enough people who think the same way to cause a few of the Southern and Mid-Western states to swing Democrat to carry the election.
Hillary Clinton with a Democrat Senate and House of Representatives will be able to advance their socialist agenda beyond your wildest dreams, but that ain't the worst of it. The Supreme Court will establish their dictatorial socialism so firmly and deeply it will be a century, if ever, before it can start to swing back.
I don't see a bright future for freedom loving people in the United States of America.0 -
I think people on this board would be surprised to know how many gun owners ONLY care about hunting. And many of them do not think that any one should own protection handguns or any rifle or shotgun that is not specifically meant for hunting only. I have run into many of them at the ranges over the years. They will vote for Giuliani, I bet. 0 -

Oh please! The election cycle hasn't even heated up and you're already throwing in the towel.
In most recent elections for OPEN POTUS seats, the front runner early on rarely wins the nomination. Bill Clinton was a nobody, Reagan was a two-time loser, McCain was supposed to win and Howie Dean had the nomination cinched before the first primary.
You don't even have everyone interested in running having declared their candidacy yet.
Darkhorses and front-runners mean zilch at this stage of the game.0 -
I hope conservatives will continue to support any conservative candidate that is presented. Anything is better than Socialism in this country so I will always vote against the Obama/Hillary block.
I like Newt Gingrich over anybody suggested so far.
The problem is, the swing vote is not happy with the war effort and they will back the candidate that will cut & run! They will determine the outcome of the election.
The swing vote has a very short attention span. They will support the republicans for a few years and then get tired of them and support the Democrates for a few years then swing back the other way. Gingrich isn't a bad choice. I think, however, he's got too much negative baggage to win. He's not the most likable guy, despite the fact that he's rather brilliant and is right on most issues.

Giuliani comes across as someone who wishes not to offend other people, but to appease them.
Frankly, I can not see the American public embracing him. As a matter of fact, I think most anyone that comes from any of America's largest metropolitan areas, especially those in blue states will be viewed as people not to trust.0 -

New York sucks, they have to register those nail gun bullets, and they have to account for everyone they use. only proves one thing, no vote for me, i would but my Sig says it all. i like and respect the man cause he's a man for putting things in action, just wish he would see whats hes doing to the regular citizens on gun control. after all a police officer ain't going to be around when something goes down. 0 -

This actually goes a bit with something I wrote today -- why f-ing with the Electoral College is a horrible idea. It is something that is getting more and more popular with people around the country. People are still pi$$ed off that Gore lost in 2000, and they want to make sure that the person who wins the popular vote is elected POTUS. Like most liberal "feel good" ideas, they don't think these things all the way through.

Pick someone who has the capability to lead. Pick someone who knows the issues. Pick someone because you've taken the time to learn about them, and you've taken the time to learn about the issues they stand for.

This is truth. As several have stated, not all those that own and use firearms are totally gun "friendly". We are an ever shrinking minority, with some very savvy opponents who have no problems putting their spin/lies before a more and more uninformed public. I WISH that the law makers would REALLY understand the 2nd Amendment IS about, bearing arms for the citizens to act against unscrupulous / repressive governments and NOT about hunting rights!
I want to scream every time a Hillary Clinton type tells me it's about hunting and why would I want an assault rifle?? ...Grrrr!
Even an old redneck like me knows our fore Fathers weren't worried about hunting rights!
