WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A man was held Wednesday on charges that he performed dental work on customers without a license in his "filthy" garage, authorities said. Roger Bean, 60, was arrested Tuesday and held on $6,000 bond.

Bean performed denture fittings and made false teeth in his garage, charging just $200 for a full set of dentures, a procedure that typically costs more than $2,000, authorities said. But he was not licensed to practice in Florida.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's detective Don Zumpano said there were "health risks with operating this type of facility outside of your house," adding that Bean's workspace was "filthy."

Neighbors and clients, however, praised Bean for saving them thousands of dollars.

Ron St. Mary, 73, head of the neighborhood crime watch, said Bean is no criminal.

"He's helping the old people who don't have a few dollars," he said. "I think the world of him."

It was not immediately clear if Bean had an attorney.

    False charges it was donations..

Bet some dentist turned him in! Now the "old folks" can get their dentures from a filthy legal lab that is licensed! (and the dentists can get their "kickbacks") Making and fitting dentures ain't rocket science! (I think it requires plaster of paris for the molds and a polyresin for the fixtures...grind and polish to fit and vinyl gloves) But then I'm ignorant of the skill level it takes to actually make em look good.
(Couldn't be too high as the 10th grade students at a tech school dental assistant class are taught to measure and make the molds)

Maybe "detekertive"" Don Zumpano should take a close look at the restaraunt kitchens around West Palm! (do this in any town and ya'll never eat out again) Come to think about it thats a health inspectors job and he's not trained to have a "experts" opinion on it. Just an "uninformed" opinion sames you and me. (unless your a inspector)

Heaven forbid that someone should help folks out without charging an arm and a leg for it!

Maybe he should start a free class where the students make their own dentures and buy their own materials! (Donations accepted)

His neighbors and clients should show up "en masse" and let the "elected" authoritys know exactly how they feel about the use of their tax dollars to "catch" a 60 yr old man for not paying fees and letting the rampant drug trade in West Palm forge ahead unimpeded!

Been looking on the net for the cleanliness standards for a "dental lab" in Fl and can't seem to find any. Will check with Tallahasse tomorrow and see if theres any at all.

Heck, that's nothing. When I was a teenager I was so poor and dumb that I actually had a dentist fill my tooth cavity while he was smoking a cigar. And his dentist chair, equipment, office was nothing but his screened in front porch on one of the busyest city streets in K.C., MO
