antivirus??
Could someone post a link to that free antivirus, I think it was AVG?? My norton expires soon and thought I would try that.Anybody that knows of anything better let me know.

the words "the best" and "free" dont often occure in the same sentence. this case is the same. the best antivirues software imho is the norton your are currently using. the internet security package, which include the av software, pop up blocker, firewall, net security pkg and email monitoring. auto updating and the best database of virus definition on the market. nobody can match their stats.
think about it like this: norton has a staff of people that monitor the internet for new viruses and spyware and what not(hereunto reffered to as "virus". as each new virus is discovered, they immediatly write a counter for it and make avail for download. maintaining the database, servers and what not takes a lot of time and manpower. how can a company provide that service for free and be at that level of security. wether their not holding up their end, or they have another form of revenue(allowing popups from any retailer that pays them, spyware to monitor your activities to see what you buy and therefore who to let target you with adds.....) they have to make that ground up somewhere.
symantec has gotten to be the biggest internet security provider among residential user for a reason. they do it better than everybody else. in case you havent guessed it by now, my reccomedation would be to renew your norton.0 -
NORTON absolutely sucks. They are a resource hog and it is a major task to uninstall.
I use AVG and it is superior in everyway. NOT a resource hog and can be uninstalled without asking NORTON for permission.0 -

I would go to PC Tools, and download their free anti-virus program.
You can run it as long as you want, and it's very good. If you do decide to buy into it, it's very reasonable, with a 30% discount for every consecutive year you continue.
Their "Registry Mechanic" and "Spyware Doctor" are also award winning quality programs.

gee, i read the box where it said system requirments and correlated that to available resources, noting that my system far exceeded minimum resources. installed the softtware and havent had a single resource problem.
now if a person with a barely competitive system were to run the same software, i could see how it might be a problem. this isnt a flaw in the package, its a flaw in the end user hardware.
one also must lookt at why its a "resource hog". because its actively monitoring every internet tranaction for lack of a better term thus defeating problems as they occure, not waiting until they have already infilitrated the system and done their damage.
when defending a fort, is it more efficient to leave it defenseless and once a week go arounf and try to roust the undersirables after they have alreay made home or to built a defense system to keep them out in the firt place. one is less manpower(read sys resources) intensive, but untimatley ineffective. the other requires more manpower(read sys resources) but is fundamentaly more effective in the long run.
another consideration regarding overall effectiveness in internet use is the user, or more accurtaly the use. if a person visits a small number of clean, safe web sites, checks their one email address and logs off and shuts down their computer. they are relatively safe from internet threats. whereas if the user visits a large number of varied content sites, engages in frequent online shopping, has digital accounts across many servers, has multiple e-mail addresses, leaves their computer on is standyby mode when not in use and has a digital connection(always on. cable etc) they are more likely to be a victim of internet attacks by a considerable margin. comparing these two users is essentially pointless for their activities differ greatly at the very base.
my previous response was of my person al opinion. it was not meant as an attack against anybody who chosses to use other software. whatever floats your boat. it has just been my experience that some software does a lackluster job of protecting a system. based on my ten years personal and professional experience in home and business computer systems.0 -

Now would you like to comment on their non-navigable website, poor customer service, excessive order processing times (my last upgrade took 50 days from order to confirm), and a 1.5hr call to India to delete/install (seems it can't upgrade itself either), and why I'm still getting "subscription expired" notices even though I ordered a 2yr 'script 11/16/06 (that didn't confirm until Jan/6/07).

Probably 98% of the problems today are not viruses.
They are ad/mal/spy ware.
This is not scientific, its my own observations from the 30 some machines that I support.
The cheapo Norton's or McAfee stuff sucks, plain and simple.
The corporate versions of Norton's are great, but in most cases, that is not your problem. Its ad/mal/spy ware.
And, there are many ad/mal/spy ware intrusions that no program can find.
They generate random filenames that trick the anti software.
You need to do it manually until the companies figure out a way to do it in their software. Usually with signatures, but sometimes they are tricked too.
I highly recommend the paid for version of Pest Patrol.
But of course, there are bugs out there that even it can't find.
Try the free pest patrol home edition and see what it can do for you.

AVAST!! Go to www.avast.com and sign-up for the free version...You'll need to re regester every year, but it's better than "PANDA" and all the others i've tried over the past10 yrs.
Than go to www.regsweep.com amd run their program every time you defrag, you'll be smooth-sailin' my friend !!!

different people have different experiences. i have never had a problem with my subscription, orderprocessing time nor cust service. maybe ive been lucky. i keep my computers super clean. constantly update my software and scanning absolutley no less than weekly. i have no spyware, adware or any other malicious software. i use norton and exclusively norton. maybe im lucky. maybe its just good software. maybe its not a question that can be answered. the original poster has gotten the information he requested, plus the candid opinions during this debate. i suggest that we call the issue done with and all choose to use the software we like and agree to disagree.

Avast! is free and works really well. I've used it for about 6 years so far, and the only complaint is that when you break down and send a donation, there's no confirmation e-mail.
I also use SpyBot Search and Destroy(also FREE) to eliminate any malware, tracking cookies, spyware, dialers, hijackers, trojans, etc.
Great stuff, and Symantec can take a flyin' leap!0 -
