I used to laugh at folks who were buying Gold a few years ago....
I'm not laughing anymore0 -
Just wait until we tic China off and they push all their gold onto the metals market. Right now gold should be less then 15% of an individuals total holdings. 0 -
I bought some gold when it was $500 an ounce and I was a little leery of it then.
Boy am I glad I took the risk.[8D]
Elkoholic,
China would dump our treasury notes before they dumped their gold reserves. They have no reason to want a depressed gold market as it would yield them few, if any, returns.
But killing the dollar? I can think of a few reasons why they'd fancy that.0 -
Gold will come down faster than it went up. It is all a house of cards right now, wait and see. They are mining more gold than ever, and the supply will outpace demand soon. Jewelry demand for gold is almost nil right now. Most jewelers have VERY slow sales lately, because of the price.

I wonder what the percentage split is for new gold mined and put on the market?
Jewelry
Industrial uses
Investment/Coins
Other uses?0 -
The price of gold varies inversly with the value of the US Dollar
I hate to break it to you guys but your dollar is going down the toilet.
A year ago It cost me $1.25 to buy a US $. Now I get $1.03 USD for my once worthless Canadian Dollar.
The USD is worth less than a Canadian dollar. It is falling against all major currencies.
Gold will be $1000 USD an ounce if this keeps up0 -
Practicality, Usability are major factors in worth.. I happen to believe firearms are the best investment one can make. They are functional in time of need, and hold resale value depending on make and model, Buy some AK's and AR's when and if s ever does htf I promise you your guns will have the highest value far more than any gold bar.

Does anyone else have a BB gun? When I was a kid I remember the BBs were COVERED in copper, nowadays it seems as if they are half assed speckled with copper. Is it too much for copperhead to copper coat their BBs if nothing else to live up to the fact that their label claims the bb's are copper coated. 0 -
Recently I've seen BBs that look like they were zinc plated. They had a dullish silver-white color to them, much like galvanized nails. 0 -
Merc,
Demand may have gone down here recently, but that's because the economy isn't doing so hot. But I guarantee you that demand is steady in India and China.
I'm not saying the price will skyrocket or that it won't go down, only that you have to consider international trends as well.
I think it'll stay around $730-760 for the foreseeable future.0 -
Holy Crap! I just noticed that EMM is a Mod. When did that happen??? Just messin' with you EMM, congrats.
As for the discussion at hand, we have a plant in Western Australia at a gold/copper mine. They are going balls-to-the-walls right now and the job market out there is tight. There are kids dropping out of high-school at grade 10 and going to work for the mines starting at $100,000 AUD/year.0 -
And I use to laugh at a friend back in the 70's that picked up cheap gold plated jewelry, sun glasses and such..
Yea the same one that now has three softball sized chunks of gold laying in his gun safe.0 -
Buy orange juice futures! 0 -
This morning Gold is $751, Platinum is $1412 per troy oz.

For those of you into trading stocks and mutual funds gold is a great diversifier because it goes up when the market is down.
GLD is the ticker symbol of an ETF which is a pretty popular choice. It is affordabel as well-its price is usually about 10% of the gold price.0 -
For all you folks that can't afford to get on the gold train now, silver is still within your reach, if you are smart enough to grab it. As always though, if you hesitate, you will miss the boat. 0 -

I would go with the silver and get it in your hand, not just on paper. How many folks will trade you goods and services for palladium? Silver spot prices are easier to understand for most people not in the know. A silver dollar is about an ounce. What does an ounce of palladium look like or resemble?
Here's a blast from the past;

GLD is $74.00 a share. It is the world's largest gold backed exchange traded fund and it invests in GOLD!
If Silver is your flavor SLV is an exchange traded fund for silver but is spendy per share at $137.00
These ETFs are a quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive, lower risk, way for the average person to take a position in gold or silver.
In case anyone is wondering an ETF is like a mutual fund but it trades on the stock exchange.
GLD is always priced at 10% of the London Gold Price. So if you are sure gold is going up by 100 shares of GLD for $7400. If gold hits 900 your 100 shares will be worth 9000. Even buying 10 shares is fun to watch and you never know you might make a few dollars[8D]0 -
Gold $751/oz Platinum $1426/oz and Silver bumping up against $14/oz.

The supply is not increasing fast enough to meet demand -- the easy gold deposits have all been mined; the cost per ounce to mine new ore is only going up.
You are very mistaken if you think jewelry demand is any major factor in causing the recent dollar-price run up in gold. It is gold's "alternative currency" value which is driving demand. Gold is not breaking any records when measured in other currencies besides the dollar.
So long as the world's governments keep inflating their fiat money supplies, gold will keep rising. We will see $2000/oz -- and probably a lot higher -- in a few years.
The "house of cards" is the U.S. dollar, not gold.0
