definition of "assault rifle"
I am curious of your definition of the term "assault rifle." This is a term that is often used (and abused - IMHO). I know the image that the term conveys to me, but I do not know what it conveys to you. Alternatively, is their a "legal definition" of the term?

I've always considered them to be a select-fire rifle which fires an intermediate cartridge (such as 7.62x39 or 5.56 NATO)

Although I'm not a fan of it, I don't think the .223/5.56 is considered an "intermediate power" cartridge.
Even if it is, can anyone define an "intermediate power" cartridge for me??

An assault rifle happens to be the rifle, in the hands of the enemy; being fired in your direction at the time.
It could be a 36 caliber Balck powder squirrel rifle up to and including a Photon Plasma Phaser.0 -
Non-gun civilians call any gun that is a semi-automatic, looks like it could be a military type firearm and has a detachable magazine (therefore capable of accepting hi-capacity mags) an "assault rifle". If there truly are such things as some firearms truthfully deserving the term "assault" then it would be rifles like the M-16 and AK-47 that are in the hands of the millitary or the terrorists and FIRE MORE THAN ONE ROUND PER ONE TRIGGER PULL.
But it is merely a gun-ban ploy for the anti-gunners to call our plain ol" semi-automatics (one shot per one trigger pull, just like with a revolver) "assault rifles". The ploy being that using that name automatically makes those firearms scary and evil and so they are only worthy of being banned forever, in the mind of the anti-gunners.
Kinda like hanging the term "child molster wtroper" onto your name and using it every time they refer to you. By doing that you are automatically and instantly hated by everyone. So, even thought the firearms owned by American gun owners are not "assault rifles", and even though you are not a "child molester", if people who hate you were able to connect such negative terms to guns and to you, any attempts at defending you or your position is almost hopeless.
Oh, BTW, everytime we gunners casually use the term "assault rifle" it hurts our cause because it makes the word more and more "real" and acceptable.0 -
Thank you. You gentlemen (I presume), have made my point much better than I ever could. An "assault rifle" today is something that our enemies (the anti-gunners) understand. We, the gun-folks, know what is being referred to, but we think that it is just another gun.
IMHO, we, the gun folks, should refrain from ever using that term. I believe, with all my heart, that I could assault someone, a group, or a fortifide position with a single-shot rifle. I might not be successful, but I could do it. Let us talk about semi-automatic military-style rifles. I do not even like the term, "black rifles." Please do not use the term, "assault rifle." You are only feeding the giant that wants to consume you. Just my opinion.0 -

In red above. You put that quite well. Said better in one sentence than I have heard it said in an entire paragraph (maybe my paragraph). Sadly, you will find many here who don't believe what you are saying is true. Or, even worse, they are somehow proud of shouting the term form the rooftops. Come to think of it, I wonder how those people feel now that Congress Woman Karen McCarthy has introduced a reinstatement of the old, expired "assault weapons" ban?0 -
