More than 250 faith-filled Georgians joined Gov. Sonny Perdue outside the Capitol this morning to pray for the rain needed to end the area's historic drought.
Perdue asked them to "reverently and respectfully pray up a storm."
The governor was joined by several ministers; his wife, Mary; Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle; and many other state elected officials.
Gil Watson, senior minister of Northside United Methodist Church, prayed, "Lord, have mercy on your people, have mercy on us and grant us rain. Oh God, let rain fall on this land of Georgia."
About a dozen TV cameras representing local and national stations and more than a dozen print reporters and photographers captured the ceremony. At one point a TV helicopter threatened to drown out much of the sound.
Twenty-two protesters were forced to stay more than a block away, out of earshot and out of sight of the prayer service, on Martin Luther King Drive. They were members of the Atlanta Freethought Society. Signs include "Hail Priest-King Perdue" or "Pray on the Church Steps, not the Capitol Steps."
A lone demonstrator in front of the Central Presbyterian Church, directly across the street from the Capitol, was arrested minutes before the prayer service.
Police pulled a small sign from his hands ?_" which on one side read "Ten Commandments" and the other side "H.R. 536." The latter was a reference to a measure before the state Legislature that would declare human life to begin at the moment of conception.
Perdue said after the event that Georgians have not done "all we could do in conservation" and that the drought was an attempt by God to "get our attention."
"Hopefully we will be better conservators of the blessings God's given us as he gives us more (rain)," the governor said.

I wonder why god never gave the holy land much rainfall? Seems like all the areas in Africa and South America that have witch doctors and rain dances get it all.
Maybe their more powerful gods are taking all the water?

Why did GOD cause the drought in the first place?...and why wasnt prayer thought of sooner........they need at least 18" of rain just to make a dent in the problem. I also agree an Indian rain dance would be more effective than prayer.[;)] 0 -

Not hate at all. Pity. People that should have freedom of thought and freedom of action bound by a rigid, intolerant way of thinking. A way of thinking that decrees most all pleasurable human functions a sin. A system that causes minds to close off scientific evidence that contradicts anything that doesn't agree with the bible or religious dogma. It's not just the Christian religion, it's all superstitions, hell, the Moslems are even worse! They destroy ancient artifacts rather than even allow them to exist.
If people would look at religion, I mean take a hard, critical look, instead of just accepting what your fathers father believed, most would conclude that it's a bunch of hokum for the uneducated simple people of history. All the old gods of the Greeks, the Romans, the Vikings, have vanished or been superceeded by more modern, up to date, hip gods. Publicly, candidates belive in all the gods, privately, they believe in none. They are shooting for the votes of the believers because by their very nature, they are easily led.
No, it's not hate. It's pity for the great minds that are lost to dogma. For the suffering caused by people praying instead of getting off their ass and fixing a problem. For the strife caused by weak minds wreaking havoc just to prove his god is better than your god.
I seldom write this much about it because it falls on deaf ears and blind eyes. For some, it's scary to face the world on it's terms. For that reason, god was created to give comfort and for many, he does.0 -

Well, I'm pretty sure that it will not be news to God that Georgia needs rain. I mean God knew that Georgia was going to have a rain shortage long before anyone in Georgia knew about it. So will asking God to change something that he apparently already approved do anything but annoy God?

I really and truly can't understand the logic behind people praying and asking an all knowing, perfect, entity to change its mind.

Well, yeah, but God already knew what "my people" were going to do and not do and how EVERYTHING was going to turn out. So, with God having all the knowledge of what "my people" were going to do, wouldn't that be about the same as me watching the movie Black Hawk Down for the 50th time and me yelling at the screen for our troops to duck the enemy bullets?
Religion cannot claim God as being all knowing and then tell a story about how God said if "my people" will just make the right choice of action (in this case praying. A praying BTW that God already knows that they will or will not do.) then God will fix their problems.0 -
Logic, being a product of scientist, has no place when dealing with the mysterious almighty. HE works in ways we can't possibly understand.
