Seller: Online gun sale attracting convicted felon

COLLIER COUNTY: A Collier County man is having second thoughts about selling his AK-47 online because of the buyers the rifle has attracted this week. He says most of the people that responded to his Craigslist.org posting are convicted felons.

It's completely legal to sell the AK-47 online. Still the seller, who we are calling "Jeremy," says he does a background check on every person who shows an interest in buying it.

An AK-47 is the type of gun thought to have been used to kill a Miami-Dade police officer on Thursday. Jeremy was asking $1,000 for his.

The gun's appearance doesn't prevent its sale in pawn shops across Southwest Florida. In fact, your right to bear arms means you can walk out with a rifle in minutes - provided you pass a background check.

Rusty Forehand is federally licensed to sell all types of guns at Gun Masters and Pawn in North Fort Myers. But he says he has to deny anyone with a criminal history.

We asked Forehand what is stopping a felon from going online and getting from a private seller instead of from him. Forehand replied, "Absolutely nothing."

Jeremy says he has had several offers for the gun he's desperate to get rid of.

"That thing could end up leaned over the counter of a bank and I don't want to be a part of any of that," said Jeremy.

He says it's been a wake-up call for him this week. He has had far too many felons stopping by his Naples home to respond to his listing. He says even though he is not legally responsible to check out a potential buyer, he's doing it anyway - every time.

Jeremy was hesitant to show his face Thursday night and he swears he'll never risk his family's safety over a gun sale.

"That sucker will sit in my attic for the next 10 years. I am not getting rid of it to anybody who is dangerous," said Jeremy.

State law allows private citizens to make private gun sales online or at gun shows.

"It's 100-percent in the hands of the person who owns it to take the responsibility and try to be as safe as you can about it," said Jeremy.

Jeremy says it is that exact thought that made him take his posting off of Craigslist.org.

    This is a complete....BULL-HOCKEY....story in every way it can be!!!! No friggin way is any of this a true tale....but more of another fictitious tale drawn up by the anti-gun tear jerking blow hards.

    This morning I saw a man actually give the keys to his brand new HUMMER H2 to the junkyard and they crushed his car for scrap metal....because he saw ten people speeding on the freeway and thought his car would someday plow down a child walking on the sidewalk. This is a TRUE STORY....for real....scrapped his Hummer out....for REAL!!!! (believe either one of these tales and I have some antique snow flakes for sale....cheap....contact me for details.)

    Lets list what is wrong with this story.....

    1....Craigslist is NOT a firearm sales website

    2....Felons, trying to get around the system, NEVER EVER go on line to find an FFL to buy an overpriced weapon in order to avoid getting caught.

    3...No self respected dealer of firearms would EVER say to anyone that they were setting aside a particular type of weapon because "it could end up leaned over the counter of a bank."
    (we won't even get into the many many many problems with this #3 of the list....which sounds like a 9 yr old girl's statement rather than an FFL holder.)

    4....If you say to the media "chocolate is a weakness of mine" you will be quoted as saying "chocolate factories are trying to kill my family."

    5....Nobody can do a background check on just anyone they please.

    6....The gun he is "desperate to sell" is so overpriced I am wondering if he may have picked the wrong business to go into...his family may want to have some type of meeting where they get his attention before he loses the farm.

    Sounds like there must be a lot of convicted felons reading Craigslist -- somehow that doesn't surprise me!

    As already noted, the story is a complete fabrication written (or "produced" if this is from a TV report) by someone trying to "scare" the public into accepting more anti-gun laws.

    Leftist propaganda from "journalists" with no moral objections to telling bald-faced lies.

    That's what I thought too. You can't do a national background check but in some states you can do a local one through the online court records. I sold a S&W 868 privately in the state of Iowa. I asked the guy what his full name was and what city he lived in. I ran his information through Iowa Courts Online and came up with a traffic violation. That's it.

    I checked out the girls I dated in Iowa too. One was in the middle of a lawsuit filed by her childcare provider and I had no idea. One girl gave me her number and I was going to take her out on a date. I ran her info and she had repeated charges for "Theft in the 5th Degree" which means that she repeatedly wrote checks that didn't clear. I never took her out.

    So....this "Jeremy" is so afraid of these "felons" that he is willing to make it public knowledge that he IS KEEPING the AK and that he is storing in IN HIS ATTIC. Won't those "felons" that he was so afraid of and who he "checked out" now think of coming back when "Jeremy" is not home? Or even get their .25 cal Jennings and come back and just rob Jeremy of his way overpriced AK?

    What a made up story by some anti-gun loonies who are willing to lie to try and advance their "gun free" (except for police and "felons") America.
