Dawnie's Aunt, More Bad News
Dawnie's Aunt Ronnie, who lives in New York, suffered a massive brain hemorrhage from a burst aneurysm. She was taken off life support, but still lives, though in a deep coma. The doctors say she will never recover. Dawnie's mother, Ronnie's sister, gave the DNR order, so there will be no feeding tube. Ronnie is 65.
Dawnie called the hospital, and Ronnie's step-daughter held the phone to Ronnie's ear, so Dawnie could tell her goodbye and that it is OK to go.
Dawnie's father suffered a similar aneurysm, and was comatose for 7 years, then came around, then died only days later of a heart attack. Dawnie has said that if she has such a defect, she doesn't want to know, but I think she has changed her mind, and may have some ultrasound done to see if she has a lurking problem.

Strokes are vicious.
It is good that Ronnie has been taken off life support. Hopefully, she will soon painlessly pass on.

David, I thought DNR was "Do not resusitate(sp?)"...not the act of not feeding someone who was still alive on their own. Does DNR really allow for someone to be starved if they have the ability to stay alive on their own, otherwise?0 -
My prayers go out to y'all, but if I may try to offer a small measure of comfort, it is a good thing that Ronnie moves on in the company of people who love her dearly. Too many people die alone, unloved, and unremembered and we should remember that we are not losing someone, they are simply gaining their reward.
It's also a good thing that you have gotten Dawnie to get checked out. Forewarned is forearmed. Ignorance is not bliss - it's dangerous, plain and simple.

"To be starved?" if you have the ability to stay alive only if force fed ... I don't believe that is the 'ability to stay alive.' I find it interesting that so many religious folks find it convenient to interfere with 'God's Will' by using such artificial means and yet constantly proclaim it is not Man's place to interfere with His Work and His Will. Any use of machines, medication, etc. interferes with His Will ... by definition. Interesting dilemma you find yourself in, eh?
