TEAMSTERS
if there is any UNION teamsters out there i need a question answered. on a union job, heavy hiway contract, is it the responsibility of the driver to place the material on the truck or is it the job of the laborer. please no guessing i need hard facts.

If I was a teamster I would not touch the load! I would inspect it to make sure it is safe.
On pipeline jobs you NEVER see a teamster get out of their vehicle. And operators usually use equipment to place heavy loads on trailors.0 -

I'm a Teamster, part of the Local 135. I work in a Corn Wetmilling and Starch Production Plant.
To answer your question...
The Teamster in this case is responsible for getting the load from A to B, safely and in a timely manner. The person who loaded the trailer is responsible for the load itself. If it was loaded correctly and securely and the driver was a mad man, it would be apparent.
At the plant, our warehouse personnel take pictures of the load before it is sealed for the drivers (outside contractors) take the load away.0 -

They started as drivers, other work forces joined up.
I get a monthly Teamsters magazine, I can't count how many work forces join the Teamsters who aren't drivers.0 -

You are right, I was wrong.
I just checked out their site and apparently they have watered down their membership and representation. I can only speak of unions that abide by the national pipeline agreement. Under that agreement teamsters only drive.0 -

I understand where you were coming from. They started as drivers and picked up groups here and there.

the reason i ask this question , when i first got into the union as a LABORER i was on a road job and was helping the teamster offload his truck when the teamster BA seen me helping the driver' well he chewed my arse real bad and told me that it was the drivers job to get the material to the back of the truck before i could touch it . since then he has passed away . but now i am working with a real a hole teamster and he says his only job is to drive, that i am to place the material on the trailer and to place the chains and he will bind the load . still wondering??????????
i tried to call the teamsters hall but the BA was out of town0 -

It depends on how the contract for that company was written!
My last job with Martin Brower (Teamsters) it was in our contract to unload the truck (get the item off the trailer) by either useing rollers or getting carts of the back and it was the responcability of the McDolalds that we were delivering to to get the product into the store.
THere are some companies who do not touch any product.
You need to contact your local and talk with them to see how the contract is written as it will be laid out in there to the letter!0 -
Stop being a fool and just load or unload the dang truck! The sooner you get it loaded/unloaded, the sooner you can get done.

That was how I felt for the most part back when I was still working.
But I also had driving jobs that you would be repremanded if you did touch the load (doing any loading or unloading) and you were caught.
That is why I said he needed to check out the wording in the union contract.0 -

I just read this closer.
It may be that you are to load it for him, but it does not sound right that you as a non driver would have to place the chains (I could be wrong though).
Makeing sure the load is secure is a drivers responcability at all times!
The only exeption to this would be if the driver picks up a loaded and sealed van type trailer where since the trailer was sealed he could not inspect the load. And even then it is walking a fine line with DOT.
You definatly need to talk to the union rep on this as something does not sound right!0 -

you dont understand . i am not afraid to work and i help most of the drivers ofload, but this guy is a total JERK and i dont want to do any more than i am required to do to help him. as far as asking my BA , he dont care. he will tell you to steal as much work as you can get away with0 -
I never was a Teamster, but my buddy Mark was, about 35 years ago or so. He loaded trucks on a dock, and never drove anything but a fork lift. Once he got the truck loaded, a truck driver, also a Teamster, drove it to it's destination. 0 -
