Knowing how to speak spanish can be very important in today's society.

It's not like they're pushing mexican customs or culture on them. They're just teaching them some spanish.

Spanish may be the official language of this country before too long anyhow.[;)]

Hello all, not to but in but I do agree with both sides. I do not like the cartoons puing spanish at all, My kids love it and I think in todays life I have to let it go for there benifit, I was not allowed to take spanish and it has cost me good jobs that I was over qualified for but no spanish.I think the way the US gov is going our children are going to have to learn it or be left at McD's. Not that I approve, we all have a relative of ome distance that died in a war on someone elses dirt to make damn sure we didn't speek a forign language, that is the part that pisses me off, it's like the gov. just forgot the last hundred years of kicker country's asses.... OK I'm done sorry, just wanted to add my two cents.... and change[:D]

I wish I knew more Spanish. Then I would't need an interpreter to speak to half my employees.[:D]

They are not illegal, They are from Puerto Rico.

And BTW, they work their tails off! Even when no one is looking.

Yep, no advantage to being multilingual, won't help you communicate with more people, won't help you get a better job, hell all you could do with it is talk to people your old man doesn't approve of.

Unfortunately I am not very gifted when it comes to learning another language. I travel to Mexico every year and have tried to pick a little up but there is a big difference between Gringo Spanish and fluent Spanish. Especially Cubans, they speak so fast it will make your head spin. I suppose if I were immursed in the language and culture for a number of minths I might do better but I doubt it.

So I'm not too harsh on those that have a hard time with English. Now If they have lived here for 20 years that's another story.

I have related this story before, but this thread seems like a good place to tell it again.

Keep in mind, that this happened in a little town, just outside Denver Co. Longmont to be exact.

A guy I know tried to put his daughter into pre-school. Since pre-school is NOT a grade mandated for children to attend, the school WOULD NOT allow her to go to school there. The reason, because she could not speak spanish.

They would have allowed her to go to school, when she reached the age for MANDATED schooling. They have no choice then.

Being bilingual in the future is going to be a necessity.
Thanks to our government's policies on border control.

I learned to speak enough spanish to get through a traffic stop and be able to issue a citation. I got tired of having to let "them" go because I could not communicate with them. Now, I will be speaking spanish to "them" and they still tell me, "I don't speak english". I say, "I'm not speaking english you dumba**, I'm speaking spanish".

I pull out the handcuffs and say, "comprende' arrestado?" and they start speaking english real fast.

I have a ? for pickenup, this pre-school was a public school that the child was denied access to, or a curch operated or what. I'm going to try and google it but if you have more info it would be helpful.
Back in the early eighty's I worked for a company that provided some electric motors to the goverment of Argentina, for the use in a ironore pelletizing plant, and I went down to install them and get the plant up and running. Over the period of two and a half years, I spent about a year in that country, one of the things I was most supprised by was that more then 50% of the work force at the job site were not locals, there were people from Australia, Germany, England, and almost every one spoke more then one language, I dont understand why it's a problem for people to learn another lanuage, Now do I think that people who come here to live should learn to speak english, absolutly! and If that child in Colorado was denied access to a public school, somebody should lose there job, but in this age a second language is almost a must. and it is important for this nation to be able to speak with others even if those others are not english speaker's to succeed in tomorrows world your going to have to be bilingual, and college educated.

    That makes sense.

But...what doesn't make sense is that we are being forced to make that 2nd language spanish.

You won't walk out of a university with a BA/BS without a foreign language so you might as well pick the one that will do you the most good and I'll bet that Spanish is a hell of a lot easier to learn than Japanese!

I have absolutely no problem with the kids learning another language be it spanish, german, russian (hard) or mandarin chinese (freaking impossible [:p]). Kids will learn it better at age 3-8 than if they wait until high school.

Where I get ticked off (ok...pizzed off) is mandating that we speak the other language in the US. We should make english the mandatory language in business in the US...the only language that we teach in (with the exception of the language classes)...the only language that we advertise in.

Look around...the airline industry requires english to be used in all communications for international flights. Most large companies that do international business require their employees speak english as it is most likely the predominant language in the world today (I could be wrong on that).

It was a public school. I doubt that you will find anything on the internet about it. This was a private conversation that I had with a gentleman that had recently moved here.

He tried fighting it, but could find no help. Figured they would take it out on his daughter if he caused too much trouble. He moved here so that his child could go to pre-school. Which she was immediately enrolled in, with no problems. After some investigating, that is WHY he moved here.

The population in Longmont is MORE THAN 50% hispanic or latino, and growing more so, every day.
