Time for a career change ?

I had an encounter last night that just leaves me shaking my head.

A fine young man happened to be walking past the local convenience store, and noticed that some misguided soul had left her purse sitting in an unlocked vehicle. He, sensing that her possessions may be in danger, decided to secure it for safekeeping, inside his sweatsuit.

Unfortunately, other persons in this area mistook him for a thief, and detained him. More unfortunately for him, he had been convicted of three prior larcenies, which made him a Habitual Offender in the eyes of the Virginia Judicial system.

When he was taken into custody, the purse revealed a shiny new dime, and two pennies. That is all. It was a change purse.

This guy just picked up a felony charge for $0.12

I guess he could have lied about who he was, and his prior indiscretions, but he still had the Warrant Of Arrest in his pocket from when he had been released two days ago.

This guy really needs to figure out a new way to earn a living, other than the nickel an hour he will be receiving washing dishes in the prison kitchen.

    Last I heard the national average for prisoner hourly pay was $0.19, his last gig was only paying 12 cents. I guess he gets a raise for going to prison. [:p]

    Better yet lets hope the justice system hangs on to him longer than the 24 hours it may take to bail him out. If he has a rap sheet what is he doing walking the street?

    What makes you think that the authorities will put him in jail this time?

    Unfortunately, I don't doubt that he will hit the streets again. I've been in this field for 24 years.

    On the plus side, he isn't very good at what he does, and gets caught often.

    On the minus side, almost every other one that i've dealt with over the years keeps committing minor crimes until he does a big one, and gets sent away for good.

    I also happened to talk with two other guys last night that have been getting locked up longer than I've been employed with the Sheriff's department. One of them asked when i was going to retire. I told him, "probably next year, one of us has to retire". They both got a chuckle out of that.

    My state pays our inmates zero wages...however they do supply room, board and free haircuts.

    There's alot of things the US as a whole could learn from texas law, unfortunately most other states aren't listening.

    I he was caught in Texas by a shotgun toting neighbor it might save the taxpayer a lot of money on his years in prison.

    Jeez, a guy that steals .12 cents doesn't seem like much of a threat, worse if he got food stamps.

    He was arested for burglary with intent to commit theft, just his bad luck that the purse happened to contain only a few coins.

    I agree with Doug. I don't care how MUCH the amount was, it is INTENT. There could as easily have been $50k in that purse.

    Screw these thugs. Send them to prison, forever. While they are there, PUT THEM TO WORK! Our infrastructure is falling apart, WE NEED ROCKS! Little rocks that is........we HAVE big rocks!!!!!! [}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)]

    Petty crime doesn't pay ... unless it's White Collar Crime, it ain't worth doin ... I suggest the lad go get a $500 suit and fancy tie and THEN get down to business ... 'do it right ... do it white!'

    He IS a habitual offender.

    Make a SECURE border with Mexico.
    Habitual offenders (and some other convicted criminals) to be placed on the SOUTH side of said border.
    No prison cost, just the same border security we have to pay for anyway.
