Kimi Bush Completes Her First Saddle Sore 1,000 Ride
By Jack Riepe -- Special Mac-Pac Correspondent
Limerick, Pa (Sept. 23) --The eyes of Teutonic motorcycle society were on Limerick, Pa today, as Kimi Bush -- the Amelia Earhart of the Mac-Pac Eating and Wrenching Society -- sailed through her first Iron Butt Association Saddle Sore Ride, completing 1,000 miles in 24 hours. Accompanied by navigator (organizer, planner, and trip captain Dan Cain), Bush rode through four states, tracing the route of various native American tribes as they had been systematically driven from their homes and forced to live in seedy gambling casinos.
"The ride was a real challenge for me," said Bush. "It covered extensive changes in elevation, ran through multiple weather systems, and gave me the opportunity to study the feeding habits of deer under a variety of conditions. But the best part was riding into the sunset on Saturday, and then riding into the dawn the next day."
The trip was not without its moments of high adventure. The panniers of Bush's heavily laden F650 narrowly missed the mailbox post of Rick and Linda Sorensen's (the departure point) only to slam into a concrete stanchion at the first gas station.
"poop," said Bush after ramming the stanchion. "The damn thing ran right out in front of me." There was no damage to the bike and Cain/Bush Endeavor pressed on.
The consummate planner, Bush prepared for the trip by choosing the most appropriate riding gear, including practical absorbent, loose-fitting underwear. Regrettably, she left these at home and went out the door wearing a thong and a lacy brassiere from Victoria's Secret. Five hours into the trip, she attempted to powder her butt and discovered it was soaked with cold sweat. (Presumably, this happened in a ladies room, but it could have occurred anywhere.)
Anticipating a cool evening, Bush relied on her Gerbings to keep from getting chilled. She reported that switching the on the electrics would have been a welcome relief from the onset of hypothermia, if the temperature controller had been on the bike. It was actually buried under the practical underwear at home. Bush plugged her vest directly into the power outlet, and replaced the coal sweat with hot sweat minutes later.
"I can honestly say I made this trip with hot and cold running sweat," said Bush.
Bush and Cain paused at a rest area once in the night to grab a little sleep next to their bikes. Cain curled up on the blacktop, while Bush chose the relative comfort of tall grass. The sign reading, "Dog Walking Station," did little to improve her humor upon waking. Less than an hour later they were on the road again.
In answer to the question, "Were you apprehensive," Bush replied, "I was. The threat of a deer strike was constantly on my mind, as was the possibility of a mechanical breakdown." Bush's F650 was in the shop earlier this summer for a timing chain problem, made worse by the peanut butter she shoved into the engine to reduce the chatter.
Both riders adhered to the tenets of the Iron Butt Association with regard to speed and neither earned a commentary from the law. Yet Cain did mention "sensing" the electronic presence of higher authority on at least three occasions.
The duo pulled into Limerick right on schedule, amid cheers from fellow Mac-Pac members assembled for the historic event. "Everybody's waiting for you," said husband Corey. "Hurry up and start cooking."
