I'm beginning to wonder
After a snow/ice/ rain/ snow storm and freesing temperatures our County'plows left me with a 18 inch bank of snow blocking my driveway,
frozen into one big brick of ice. I have a son who just had a heart attack and had to get out to him each day. Tryng to get out in my 4X4
was a real bit of thing as it was frozen solid and had to jump it.
Snow plows I stopped wouldnt touch it as it was frozen solid. Local
(useless) kids wouldnt touch it. Too much trouble for them to work their azzes off. Now I am against the Immigration bit, but. Went to the nearby town and got a Mexican off the streets. I had a competer translation of what I wanted done printed out. First uy I stopped said he would do it. Yes, he spoke passible english and had been here for 8
years and was working on a citizenship along with a wife and no children I found out. He worked his azz off with a axe and shovel to clear it and did one hell of a great job. I am beginning to change my views a little. Where has the kids of today gone lately? A more lazy useless bunch that only wants sports and the likes but no manual labor
as it seems to be beneath them? I never saw such a hardworking person. I am a crippled up old WW 2 vet who sometimes need help but

Yep, about the way it goes. Hey, ya tried to hire a citizen but you couldn't. Then you went down the line until you found someone who would do your work. I'd of hired him too in your situation.
Damn high school kids around here won't fire a lick for under ten bucks an hour.[V]0 -

I come from Nebraska. when I lived there, you could get a job doing lawn service, convenience store, carpentry, roofing, shoveling snow, you name it. and in fact, I had done all of those to raise some cash.
then I moved to Dallas. it was strange, all the people doing those jobs I mentioned above were mexicans, indians, or some kind of immigrant. then I realized that "white folks" didn't do that. not usually anyways. there was "somebody else" to do it.
then I realized that all the hard work I put in, that gave me a bunch of skills and an excellent work ethic, that I listed on my resume and I thought looked good for those reasons, probably made me look bad to people in Dallas. as if I belonged in a lower social strata.
that's probably what you have going on there. that kind of work is "beneath them" or unneccesary. why should they chip off ice from your driveway and break their back for a few bucks when they can go get a 'normal' job inside somewhere, maybe even sitting at a desk using their computer skills? being used to that, they'd rather screw off than actually work. work isn't work to them. they don't like real work.
if they grew up in the time and place that I did, they wouldn't know any different and they wouldn't have a problem actually working like "everybody else". that is, all the other white kids doing the same thing. and that's the way it was when you were growing up too.

Started making my own money at 7 (1951). Mowed lawns, shoveled snow, babysat, 2 paper routes - morning & afternoon, taught swimming, chess and tutored math, and made some money playing poker and shooting pool.
The family was OK financially, but I wanted my own... and yes, I would have taken care of your problem for free, and called you "sir".
So would my Sons and Daughters.

Most of the first generation "mexican immigrants" work. It is the next generation or two that learns the system and does not. I have not problem with someone who will risk his life to get a job. Why not make it legal so he will go home after a period and raise his children there, not here. The children are the problem, usually. 0 -

We are so behind at times at the store because of Christmas, New Years, income tax checks coming in....etc. I've tried to hire people to help, but its the same story. You can't just pay someone to WORK anymore. You have to beg...overpay...coddle...explain every painful detail of every simple task....and almost do it yourself to get anything done....GOD HELP YOU if you dare to leave these people to themselves for any length of time....they may just end up having a "shooting competition in the back room with .22 cb rifle" rather than cleaning anything, taking out any trash, catching up on paperwork or anything else that needs to be done. 0 -
I'm like most here and would do anything for alittle money as I was growing up, and if you were elderly or disabled, the job was free.
As my kids were growing up they complained about not having any money and I would tell them to go around town and ask the folks if there was anything they could do for a few bucks, (rake leaves, scoop snow, ect). They said they would feel stupid doing that and never did. However, if a neighbor called needing help, they would go help, usually for free. They just wasn't up to seeking out those little jobs for money.0 -
growing up in the 70's i used to do what i could to earn a buck.had a little old woman across the street that had a house that she turned into apartments.i used to go over after it snowed and sweep off her porch and scoop her sidewalk.she always gave me a silver dollar for doing it.didnt think anything about it at the time.put them in a bank to save them.they were all from the 1920's. still have them to this day.[:D] 0 -
Face it , todays youth is all about "what can you do for me" not what they can do for you. I offered my nephew a hefty fee to work for me last summer, to much work he said. He would be driving now of he had. 0 -
Im 19 and i would have gladly helped you out sir. Ive done lots of things to raise money when i was younger. I dug ditches to bury conduit, i shoveled driveways, i mowed loans, i did yard work. I guess what it comes down to is how your raised. My dad was a proud IBEW union electrician for 20 some years. I guess i was just brought up with a strong work ethic. What you experienced is exactly what a few of us have been talking about....
You wont find a citizen to do the job...Either too lazy, or the work is beneath them...they could be starving and they still wont do it...not unless it pays about 15 to 20 bucks an hour and they sit on their butts the whole time....I know in Florida for lawn service all you will see is Mexicans doing the work....I dont know if they are legal or not but I assume they are...
Most also dont realize the time and money to become legal...average length of time is 5 yrs and the cost can run 10 grand, with average being 5 grand...
Mexicans, Cubans etc do most of the lawn work in florida I think, along with other "menial" jobs...but you will sure find out quick who is on food stamps and welfare...sure the hell aint the mexicans/cubans..0 -
BlackRoses is completely right about the immigrants doing the yard work. I live in florida and when i am doing my daily travels i do notice that there are more mexicans doing the work that some would consider beneath them. Also having worked at taco bell as a nightime manager and in my talks with other General Managers, i can say that employers seek out people who are not natives to this country. -Dave 0 -
When the American citizens won't do these difficult jobs, and we must turn to illegal immigrants for this labor, it is a sign of a nation in a state of decline.
I have, on occasion, hired a few Mexicans myself. They always put in a good day's work. I only met one who was a goof off, he got paid two hours, and got to spend the rest of the day goofing off back at that 7-11 where I found him.
I, too, am opposed to illegal immigration, but what are you gonna do?0 -

Some are legal, some are NOT. Some work hard, some do NOT.
A lady friend of mine (who is Caucasian) who is 1-2 years shy of being old enough to collect retirement benefits, was laid off from her job. After a while, out of desperation, she went to the welfare office to see about getting some food stamps. When she arrived, the room was PACKED with mexicans. She had to wait hours, to find out she was going to be denied. After making a comment, about how her denial was because her name wasn't Lopez or Gonzales, they reconsidered and gave her a pittance. Several more trips found the same conditions. The room was PACKED with mexicans.
Meanwhile a law was passed, that REQUIRED identification from anyone trying to collect welfare or food stamps. Each subsequent visit from my friend found the room "almost" EMPTY of mexicans, and only minutes instead of hours of waiting to be helped. Funny how that law worked.

Reading this thread is indicative of the state of this country. People will complain about how the illegals are costing us MILLIONS if not BILLIONS annually in health costs, welfare, schools, etc. But when it comes right down to it, if you need work done, that you can't find any of the lazy "citizens" to do, hiring illegals is OK. What a sad state of affairs this country is in. For both the working age "kids" as well as the "older" folks that have allowed this to happen. [V]0
