FYI: Shipping rifles through UPS

I dont know when this changed, but apparently UPS requires you to show an FFL (either 01 or 03) before they will accept a rifle. This is in Ohio, I dont know about other states. The clerk said this was due to "new laws" passed this year, to prevent people from shipping rifles out of the country.

    UPS doesn't have a clue, and they haven't had for quite a while.

    Please have that clerk show you the new law. Won't happen, 'cause it doesn't exist.

    I just shipped a pistol yesterday. All they asked me was if it was going to a licensed shop, they never asked for the FFL number.

    Clerk didn't have a clue so wanted something to cover her (or his)a$$. UPS is hopeless in trying to find someone that knows either the law or UPS rules.

    BEFORE dealing with UPS, FedX, or USPS- GO TO THEIR WEBSITE. Print the regulation that they have regarding shipping of your particular arm. When you run into the low-wattage worker that has NO CLUE what their own regulations require, and they start to give you a load of crap (you must remove the firing pin sorta thing) smile, and POLITELY say "May I please speak to your supervisor NOW ?" When the super says "What can I do for you?" The answer is, "I need to ship a firearm in accordance with your regulations. This is a copy of your regulations." Cuts right thru the crap- and you only need to do this once or twice.

    I stopped using UPS for gun shipments years ago. They are clueless and rude. I go to the Fedex transit center down by Dulles Airport, they are great friendly people there and know the regs. Never a problem.

    And Disciple, FWIW, you do NOT need a FFL to ship an arm TO a FFL- like when returning an arm to the manufacturer for repair or service.

    It all depends on how the clerk reads their regulations. I ran across this before. Most of them do nut understand that normal people can ship firearms. If you read the first part below in blue it is confusing. The red highligh is what allows unlicensed folk to send them.

    Use These UPS Services for Your Firearm Shipment
    Firearms will be transported only between licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, and licensed collectors, as defined in the United States Gun Control Act of 1968, law enforcement agencies of the United States or of any department or agency thereof and law enforcement agencies of any state or department agency, or political subdivision thereof, and between persons not otherwise prohibited from shipping firearms by federal, state or local law and when such shipment complies with all applicable federal, state and local laws.

    You must ship your packages that contain handguns with UPS Next Day Air Early A.M.r, UPS Next Day Airr, or UPS Next Day Air Saverr services
    Your packages that contain firearms will not be accepted for shipment at UPS Drop Boxes, with UPS SonicAirr service, at locations of The UPS Store or any third-party retailer, or with international services.





    Follow These Packing Requirements
    Your packages that contain handguns must be separated from other packages being delivered to UPS
    Ammunition cannot be included in your packages that contain firearms (including handguns)





    About Documentation and Labeling
    When you are shipping your package that contains a firearm with UPS, you must affix a UPS label requesting an adult signature upon delivery





    Getting Your Firearm Shipment to UPS
    You can only ship your package that contains a firearm from UPS daily pickup accounts and through UPS Customer Centers
    When you are shipping a package that contains a handgun, you must verbally notify the UPS driver or UPS Customer Center clerk
    You can use UPS daily pickup accounts to ship firearms, not including handguns, through UPS Internet Shipping, UPS On-Call PickupSM, and One-Time Pickup
    Your packages that contain firearms will not be accepted for shipment at UPS Drop Boxes, with UPS SonicAirr service, at locations of The UPS Store or any third-party retailer, or with international services

    I always bring the FFL with me. Went and shipped a handgun with Fedex the other day. The clerk asked me what she was supposed to do with the FFL. She apparently thought she was to sign it. I agreed with her and completed the shipment.
