Snowmobiles to fast?
Have we gone to far making sleds that will go 120 mph out of the box? Two riders died this passed weekend in western New York slamming into things.
I remember when a TNT went 70 mph and we thought we were flying low.I admit that the suspension systems are much inproved these days, but are we streaching the window a bit?

If I were crossing a frozen Great Lake the speed might be nice but hitting a barbed wire fence at that speed would make a clean cut kid out of you. 0 -

It's not so much the fact that they can go that fast, but the fact that some people who drive them don't know there own limitations and abilities that gets me a little irritated. When your driving on ice and snow you can't take a corner at 100 mph, on a trail where snowmobilers are traveling both ways.

It's not that the snowmobiles are too fast; it is the driver's who are too mentally slow. Alcohol is often involved in fatal crashes and Maine has resorted to setting up checkpoints on some of the major trails. If the manufacturers keep marketing speed and the drivers keep pushing the limits, the evil guvmint will step in. 0 -

You cannot compare it to a motor vehicle. With some exceptions most motor vehicles able to acomplish that speed will do so on established roads which are generally smooth and in decent condition. Motor vehicles are designed with some features to protect the passengers. Snowmobiles are for the most part designed for off road travel where hidden hazards are a rule and there is little protection for the passanger.Unfortunatly there appears to be more reason to regulate common sense than the toys we play with and general public ultimately ends up footing the bill for those that lack common sense.

how many people use themselves to grease the road with a motorcycle? around here during sturgis bike rally to number is quite a few..
couple years ago i was out to my aunt and uncle place in the black hill during bike rally christ was a staedy stream of ambulances scraping bikers off the road.....i think we should outlaw all motorcycles from public highways[:o)]0 -

Totally agree with you there.
I think its up to us as drivers to stop acting like little kids and take some resonsibility for ourselves. If we don't the "evil guvmint" will step in and force them to stop making machines. just like they did with Honda and the 3 wheeler in the late 80's. it happened once dont think it won't happen again.
Not to mention the fact that there are 10 time's the number of Enviro's and granola Heads who are just waiting for something like that to happen again. They'd throw more money at keeping those machines from being manufactured ever again, than the US threw into Iraq last year.0 -

they make several cars that go 150+ mph, but the ppl that buy them don't have a problem, it's just that the yoyos that buy those 120 mph snomobiles weren't good drivers, or they didn't understand that they were in conditions that weren't safe to be going 120 forkin' mph, like it can go 120 mph wherever you want to. duh. 0 -
I cant see alot of difference in running through a barbed ware fence at 40 MPH Vs 60 MPH. We all have to take responsibility for our own actions. My 2 Cents! 0 -
I had a 20 year old Skidoo Nuvik 220 that would still go 60 MPH ... lots of fun between breakdowns! Then I traded it for another deer gun. 0 -
My Aunt was riding on the back of a snowmobile in Michigan years ago. Driver hit a stump, threw my aunt off with cuts and bruises. He died instantly. Good thing she was intoxicated. 0 -
I have a bunch of nephews that love to high mark and play up in avalanche land, and one whose sno-buggie dynos out at 340 HP, turboed and 2"+ paddle track, he can climb out of places that we used only go down over or just ride by, Sleds have come along way since my 78 panther when I only cared if it could outrun a coyote in deep powder.
That little thumb operated system on the handle bar is just like your TV remote, you don't want to watch porno at 04:30 then hit the button and got to CNN, bottom line you don't have to mash switch unless you want to. They still sell sleds that are "normal" for normal people. people get killedd regularly on mountain bikes by going too fast in places they shouldn't, same with jetski's, boat, etc, etc.
You can't outlaw stupid, it's genetic and can sometimes be confused with a highly motivated sense of adventure.0 -
Eventually someone will make a black box that will plug into a cars computer and be able to adjust the speed limiters. Car Rental companies will buy them up first to prevent abuse of their product....then the govt will adopt it.....then they will mandate civilian compliance.
Only the rich will have the luxury of un-governed automobiles.0 -
Slowing down snowmobiles, because of the action of a few people is like banning assult rifles because someone killed someone else with an AK-47. Neither makes sense.
I have a Banshee that's very capable of over 100. 90 plus in 4 seconds in 300 feet as a matter of fact. I've been in wrecks, but I've never wreak that bike, I've always wreak a much slower bike I have. It isn't the bike, but the common sense of the rider.0 -
I would be willing to bet hitting a tree on a snowmobile at 70mph nets the same result as hitting a tree on a snowmobile at 120 mph. 0 -
when we lived in alaska I loved the fast snowmobiles.

speed limit in New York on trails is 55 mph.
I'm not trying to take the macho toys out of your hands, nor did I mean to reflect that.The average joe is not needing a rocket sled,nor is his younger brothers or children that might climb on the sled from time to time.Please convince me that the rise in sled accidents and or deaths are not related to increased speeds and the lack of stopping power.
I have ridden sleds for twenty years, watched the blown ones at the drags, love them all, I just think operating a sled at 70 mph is alot easier to control than 120.
