they used to say one million hunters would trek to the woods for the start of whitetail seaon in PA, but they acknowledged that fell off that mark during last year.

SCI's largest show each year is in Sacramento California. This place isn't all fruits and nuts.

That is a percentage, not a total number of hunters.

It is Texas by a long distance.

This was just in the news last week.

"Texas ranks first among all states in overall number of hunters, with more than 1.1 million getting permits in 2006. The nation as a whole has seen about a 10 percent drop in the number of hunters over the past decade.

Recent figures from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service show that the number of hunters 16 and older declined by more than 10 percent between 1996 and 2006, from 14 million to about 12.5 million.

But the Lone Star State distributed 14,000 more permits last year than in 2001, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service."

Texas even has more licensed out of State hunters hunting there then do most states have licensed to hunt in their home states.

I remember, as a kid in Edinboro, PA, seeing nothing but orange in every track and car that went by my house. We even had the first day of buck season off from school, since we would have all skipped anyway.[:D]

I grew up in Texas, and my family always hunted. You didn't see the large numbers of hunters in the woods every season like you do in PA & NY. That is because the hunting area is so spread out there is room to move. Here in NY everyone is trying to hunt a smaller area so it looks like there are a lot of hunters, when actually there isn't. However, there is more public lands in NY to hunt then there is in Texas. Hunting in Texas is a big business, and you have to have money to hunt most of the private game managed land areas.

New Brunswick has the highest number per capita ... one out of every eight people in the province has a deer license.
