groundhog question

How many young do they have in a litter ?
Trapped mom and 5 about 1/3 grown this week .
I did not know they had that many young in a litter .

    I've got a big (big!) groundhog that's living under my front stoop. He moves the mulch around a bit, but otherwise doesn't bother me.

    Until now. I look out into the garden the other day and he's chowing down on one of my prized beefsteak tomatos. Just wiping it out. I shooed him away but have seen evidence of his work the past two mornings.

    I can't shoot him. I live in suburbia and I don't want to lose all my guns and spend three weeks in jail. I do have access to a Havaheart trap. It is one of those box traps that catches the animal without hurting it. I also can't fence in the garden. It's too big and community regulations prohibit such actions.

    If I catch the groundhog and drive him 10 or 15 miles away and let him go by the highway, is he going to come back? Are groundhogs territorial and hence putting him in another groundhog's territory is as good as killing him? Should I just drown him?

    At that distance he will not come back. It would be a kindness to release him at sunset or dark, to give him a chance to get dug in. If you can release him in an area where he has access to both pasture and woodland he has a very good chance. None of us gets a guarantee.

    Yes, if not too old, put on the grill like chicken

    Seriously though, don't let him go too close to the highway or he will be roadkill in a hurry. Find a meadow with some woods near and let him go there.
    As far as I know, they are not extremely territorial, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    One word of warning, they look cute and cuddly, but they have big teeth and claws and are not afraid to use them when they are cornered, so keep your fingers away from it.

    Have a acurate .22? Some sub-sonic ammo? Open up the window and plug him from there. The residents around you won't hear a thing[;)] Then you can have a BBQ[:)]

    Call Animal Control. Let them set the trap and do the catch. If they are too busy get a name of the Officer and tell him that you will now take matters in your own hands. Shoot the thing.

    I could give him a nice home to live and breed to make me some targets the coyotes that are howling as I type have wiped them out around my house

    mom always soaked them in vinagar over night, rinsed well, par-boiled, added some spices in flour in a bag and fried to a golden brown yum yum[:p][:p]

    'round here, you catch a woodchuck and release it somewhere so that it can be someone else problem is a no no.
    If you do not want the chuck around, then stop playing games, and kill it.
    Catch it in a hav a hart, and then drown it. No more woodchuck.
